I recently had a flash drive scare where I thought my original drive was finally going to die on me. I think it's over 10 years old at the point (4Gb HP). Watched Spaceinvader1's video and found the suggested Kingston and Samsung on Amazon, only to come here after I ordered and received those to see that they are probably counterfeit drives. So, I will be returning both per the suggestions of others. That led me on a search to find a backup for my original drive and I found some 16gb HP drives on sale at Office Depot/Max.  The have a unique GUID and work with Unraid though I had to do a manual install. Also, the website and packaging says it's a 16gb drive, but it shows up in windows as 28.8. They are USB 2.0 drives which I know is prefered. https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/5892874/HP-v150w-USB-20-Flash-Drive/

I am going to boot up one on my test server and see how long it lasts.

A follow up to my original post. I have used this HP drive for almost a year now with zero issues. I rebooted about 5 days ago to fix a drive issue with no hang ups. Hopefully it will last as long as the last HP one I had before. The still sell them at Office Depot for under $10.00

That's probably the safest way to get a legit drive.

I wonder if you could check for its "Vendor ID" and "Demanded Current" number, both displayed in the Summary section, by running this little app - https://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtreeview_e.html

    @LolightHere you go:

    ========================== Summary =========================

Vendor ID : 0x03F0 (HP Inc.)

    Product ID : 0x2D40

    USB Version : 2.0

Port maximum Speed : High-Speed Device

    maximum Speed : High-Speed Device

    Connection Speed : High-Speed

    Self powered : no

    Demanded Current : 300 mA

    Used Endpoints : 3

  4. Did some additional searching and reading on the cannot connect to the hypervisor. Turns out the VM backup plugin I was testing is not supported anymore and when I removed that .plg from the plugins folder that went away. Still cannot login to the GUI, even in safe mode which is weird as I do not have automatic startup enabled so docker and the VM's won't start at boot. Assuming it must be another plugin now?

I did wipe my thumb drive and put a fresh install on that. Boots up quickly and can login to the GUI so I know it's not the MB, processor or video card. I did not have drives connected on the fresh install, but that shouldn't matter.

Any more suggestions on what to remove from my startup to get back into the GUI would be appreciated!

FYI... there are many people here that would like to help... but given the old version of unraid that you are currently using... I suggest making a backup of your current setup and update the version that you have to current and try booting again...

using a current version helps troubleshooting these things

It's still 6.10 so it's not that old. I typically wait until the bugs are sorted out of the newer versions and see a lot of "upgraded, no issue replies in the threads". Seems like 6.11 is mature now and my current version worked fine this AM until I added some drives which shouldn't break anything. But I would need to get into the GUI to upgrade to 6.11 right?

I am reverting back to my prior drive config to see if that gets me back in to the GUI to make changes and sort it out. I also have done some additional searching and believe that my Zigbee and Zwave sticks that attach themselves at VM startup via the USB plugin might be part of the issue. Still need to see if that is the case.

What type of HBA are you using? Cheaper amazon or a server grade HBA? Or are you running an LSI card in IT mode?

Cheaper hba cards can have issues when you load them up with drives.

I tried a cheap 100$ HBA and it threw a ton of errors or dropped disks.

Switched to a 40$ LSI card on eBay and I haven't had any issues since.

LSI in IT mode. I have had zero issues with them and years ago had two of them fully populated. With the larger drive sizes now I am down to 11ish drives.

  7. Added a few new drives to the server today to migrate my cache drive over to them as several drives in the current pool have errors. To the best of my memory here is what I changed:

Original setup was all drives connected via HBA's (two of them). I moved all the spinners to the onboard SATA connections on the motherboard and moved the single connector on the 2nd HBA to the 1st HBA as the goal was to remove the 2nd one. Connected the four new SAS ssd's on on the 1st HBA for a total of 8 total drives on the one HBA (the max).

Booted the system and cannot access the GUI, even in safe mode.

Things I have tried: Removed the new drives, but did not move the spinners back to the HBA card.

Ran check disk on the usb thumb drive. No errors. Trying to avoid "putting it back" as I need to migrate to the new drives for cache.

Logs attached. Photo attached of the errors when it's done booting.

  8. For some reason I cannot type anything in to that field. The other ones will let me change them, but that one only allows the two that already exist.

I've just gone back into it and I can't change it either.  I definitely typed it in manually yesterday, so maybe start again and see if it will let you do it initially.

Other than that can't think of anything else..

For some reason on my first try the network type was set to Bridge. I upgraded my cache drive tonight and re-installed the container and the default is Host and I was able to enter the correct Ip for the server. I have the backend setup now (I think) and just need to setup the frontend plugin on Kodi tomorrow.

Thanks again for all your help, hopefully I will be watching TV tomorrow!

  9. Ok, container is running, RDP in to the desktop and now have an issue where I cannot set my Unraid ip and the IPv4 Local Backend address.

I didn't run into this when I ran myth in a unbuntu VM, it found the IP right away.

Anyone have an idea on this one? All I can pull up are the 172 and 127 ip's. My server starts with 192

  12. The Unraid webui runs on port 80

Is that the port you've used in the Myth docker?

By default it was set to 80 when I installed it. It looks like it opens up 10 total ports and 80 is one of them. I will change it and see what happens, thanks!

Edit: I changed it to 81 and now it is running, thank you again!

  13. I am getting this error when trying to start the container, any ideas where the conflict is?

    The command failed.

Running one windows VM with nothing installed on it yet. Other containers are: Crashplan, Emby and SAB

  14. I am running a ESXi server with unRAID and windows 8 all running on a asrock c226 ws and Xeon 1245.  Those are going to cost you ~$500.  I have a LSI 9211 and 2 tv tuner cards passed to windows.  I don't believe you need to divvy out your cores to VMs I have all 8 cores assigned to both VMs.  I also remember reading that windows 7 has problems passing though GPUs on Xen.

Good info, I will look at the asrock lineup as well.

  15. I don't know if the board will work for you,  but I just picked up a supermicro x8dtn+ for $140 (ebay) and (2) 5670 6 core chips ($275) for the pair.i just got unraid and up and working (had to disable the network boot options on the pci-x slot) and will be trying out the kvm/xen scenarios this week sometime. Looking to run unraid, plex, mac osx (blu ray rips,  and I like macs), and possibly pfsense (although I might do a separate 1u server for this so that the Internet isn't down while i have the server down for maintenance.

The only issue with the x8dtn board is that it is enhanced extended atx and you either need a case to handle it (supermicro) or are capable of extending your power supply wiring (which is what I am going to be doing) to get it out of the way.

Please post your findings when you get something setup. That mobo and processor(s) might work in my case as well.

  16.

I have read through that thread a few times. Out of the 23 setups there, only one mentions the 990fx chipset and two mention using Supermicro motherboards. And several note "working" setups but their sig's note newer equipment that may or may not work for what *I* need. Looking for more insight on the 990fx setups and any new Supermicro or other boards that are newer and might work with 4+ PCIe slots.

  17. I am looking to upgrade from my older, low power setup so I can run VM's in either ESXI or Xen (yet to be determined).

I am looking for suggestions on which motherboard I should get based on the following:

Will need to run unRaid, Windows 7, XBMC with passthrough for two PCIe video cards (one for windows one for XBMC) and also have room for two M1015's.

I have been looking at the Gigabyte 990fx line and cant decide if the UD3 will be enough slots for all of that as I will need to add a NIC as well. Maybe the UD5 or UD7 would be better/more flexible?

The other, more expensive route obviously is to go the Supermicro route but I am not sure which board would have enough PCIe slots to run 4-5 cards at once and not kill performance.

I would assume the AMD Fx chips with 8 cores would be enough to assign two cores to the Unraid and XBMC clients and leave 4 for the windows client. I am not sure what CPU Intel has that would allow that without spending a ton of $$$ on an 8 core offering.

Any help, suggestions or working builds you can post would be a big help!
