  1. Hello Benson,

    Thanks for your detailed reply.

I plugged my fans on the chassis PWM controller and try to tweak the bios in manual mode. But clearly, it is no better than the "Silent" preset.

And, it seems that i can't tweak slope/ramp of the fans.

I guess it is because the motherboard is old. But right now, it does the job, except for the noise, so i don't really know if i want to change it.

Even in manual mode, can't see anything inside UNRAID :

So, i guess my best bet is hoping that the Desire case is better soundproof, or i will see to buy a new MO/CPU/RAM but i would like to avoid it..

Anyway, thanks again for your time !

Why in same FAN socket, mothboard have different FAN socket and have individuals control. Besides, CPU FAN was PWM, if you connect another non-PWM FAN with it, then those FAN will run in their max speed.

In fact, i use a splitter allowing me to pass PWM value to others fans. But as far as my understanding, motherboard only regulates fans according to CPU temp and pretty frequently as i can hear fan increasing speed for 2-3s then slow down. I should try the two other PWM but i guess it would be similar.

I have a manual option in the bios, but i don't know if a fixed value is better than an automatic regulation.

Plugin should be the only easy choice, but I don't apply this and I doubt if HDD sleep and no temperature reading what would plugin will do. If you really like to turn off some FAN during HDD sleep, then  you can make some hardware controller to detect the 12v power draw from HDD, if less then some drawing then off the FAN.

Well, easy way is not what i was looking for. Choosing unraid is about being able to control everything. 🙂

I can re-arrange my drivers to have 3 blocks of 4 drives, and i use a power-splitter 1 to 4 drives to power it. So i can add a module monitoring each block of 4 drives and turn on the fan related to this groupe if necessary i guess.

Do you have any example of this kind of hardware controller ?

    Thanks !

  3. Hello everyone,

I am testing Unraid for 3 weeks, and i guess now everything is set up and working. And i really like it.

I use 12 disks (2 parity + 10 data disks) in an old case with an old cpu/ram/alim and motherboard.

I bought Unraid Plus but i clearly need to switch to Pro, because i wanted to add more drive, don't know if there is a way to have a discount, because switching to Plus to Pro is more expensive than if i bought the Pro directly which is my mistake.

My main problem is the noise even if i use only new Noctua fans.

My Motherboard is a P8Z68-V LX from Asus, and i can't control fan speed inside Unraid (no sucess with Dynamax Fan Auto Control, IPMI or lm-sensors). I contacted Asus but they offer no support for Linux for this motherboard.

So i decided to add some acoustic foam all inside the case, but the noise persists. So, i bought a Define XL R2 case, hoping it will help and should receive it in few days.

I configure my bios to be in the quiet mode and my fans case and plugged in onto the cpu fan. Meaning that every fan is working at the same speed, basically, the max speed which is not really good (use the stock cpu fan of my i3 cpu which run at 1200 rpm).

I dont really know if there is a way to configure my fan speed according to HDD temp without passing through the motherboard, seems like the Define case have a small board to control fan speed, but don't know how it works... I bought Unraid because HDD are in standby if not in utilization, which is really good then i wanted to switch off the fans.

Do you have some advices for me ?

    Thank you a lot !

ps: i really like your wiki, but there is a missing part for iOS backup, struggle a bit to move my iOS backup on Unraid, if i can explain how i did it it will be my pleasure.

  4. Ok, i see.

I should receive my LSI controller in a week, and hoped it will work better with it, but i guess i will see.

My first goal was to stay low on budget, just bought Unraid Plus and good disk for parity and wanted to reuse my old drives (which worked fine) and some components i had from my old computer. The main idea was to add a layer of protection on my datas, and after, do some regular backup of the NAS on big drives (10To) to add another layer of security.

As Dynamax AutoFan / IPMI doesn't see my PWM controller, i guess it is the motherboard which is not really supported / good.... :(

    Thanks again !

  5. Hello Johnnie,

    Thanks for the reply !

This is also what i thought, so i start by upgrading my BIOS firmware to the latest version (well, 2013..... - link) but no improvment. I wrote to ASUS asking for help, too.

During this time, i am writing here too, because maybe someone face the same issue, i don't really know how old are SMR technology, so maybe my motherboard is too old.

    Thanks again,

    K.

  6. Hello everyone,

I use a ASUS P8Z68-V LX motherboard with UNRAID.

I configure everything with 4x WD RED 4 To (2x parity + 2x data drives) and everything is working fine.

Before, i used two small 2"5 4To drives (Seagate BarraCuda ST4000LM024) and now i move everything to UNRAID, i try to add these drives to the NAS.

But, if i plugged it, my computer won't boot and stuck at the first screen ("ASUS, press delete to enter BIOS settings"), i can't even entrer the BIOS.

I then switch the hot swap on, and if i connect the drive when UNRAID is working, it is recognize and can add it to the RAID. But if i restart, i need to unplug the drives and again, hot plug it. No references to SMR drives in the manual of the motherboard.

I read that these drives are SMR (Shingled magnetic recording), is that a thing explaining why my computer won't boot with it ?

    Thank you everyone !

    K.

  7. Hello everyone,

I have a Asus P8Z68-V LX motherboard. According to the specsheets, the motherboard uses PWM for fan control.

I installed Dynamix System Autofan, then IPMI, and finally try sensors-detect but i only see my CPU temp :

I try to deactivate Q-Fan control in the bios and rescan everything.... But unraid still doesn't see PWM

I ran out of ideas, did you have any advice for me ?

    Thanks !

  8. Hello,

    Thanks for the reply jonathanm.

I use a SMART check software on my computer, so right now, all 2"5 drives seems to be fine.

But in my head, it is better to use 3"5 NAS HDD, that's why i talked about drive failure. But it is not planned, all my 2"5 drive are good and used only at home, carefully manipulated.

And that is also why i want to buy new 2x 3"5 NAS HDD for the parity, so normally, they won't failed.

I think, right now, the more important is to invest in big / good quality parity disk, and reuse my drives, then update the data drive one by one.

    Seems good to you ?

    Thanks !

  9. Hello everyone,

I was thinking of building a RAID for long time, and during my search, i discover UNRAID.

So, i subscribe here to ask you for some help.

I know how to use a computer (i am a web dev and did a lot of VM and everything) but i am like a noob regarding NAS :-)

Right now, the main purpose of the NAS will be data storage, doing a lot of filmmaking.

If i can build something strong enough to edit directly from the NAS it will be better (i have a 10 Gb ethernet computer), but not mandatory.

For the unknown part, if i can encode some video on the NAS, it would be better too, but not mandatory.

I try to build something cheap, but evolutive.

So my idea was to buy a cheap 12 HDD rack 2U (even if I don't have a locker to store it in), add essential hardware (motherboard, cpu, ram, alim) and for the hard drives :

    - reuse my old 2"5 hard drives (3x4To, 3x2To, 3x1To)

    - buy two 10 To WD RED for parity

    - buy two 256Go SSD for cache and cache protection

That way, i can wait for the 2"5 HDD to fail and replace it with 10To NAS drive later.

Didi it seems good for you ?

    Thanks !
