[SOLVED]Zen 2 Ryzen 3900x with 3600mhz memory?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have been using Unraid for about two years now and have benefited a lot from the forum and @SpaceInvaderOne's videos. Previously I have been using a Ryzen 2 2400G-based system but this year I have so far upgraded to ASUS x570 strix E. I am waiting to get a good deal on 3900x and a pair of 2x16G G.Skill Trident Z NEO memory sticks but not sure about the speed I should go for.

From the latest AMD website:

https://www.amd.com/en/products/ryzen-compatible-memory/ready-for-3rd-gen-amd-ryzen

It appears that both 3200mhz CL14 and 3600mhz CL16 are supported:

Both kits are also supported by motherboard:

https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/SocketAM4/ROG_STRIX_X570-E_GAMING/AMD_Matisse_for_ROG_STRIX_X570-E_GAMING_DRAM_QVL_20190912.pdf

I heard 3200mhz was the officially supported highest speed but 3600mhz is the sweet spot. I am wondering if anyone knows 2x16G 3600 CL16 memory is supported in Unraid? For future upgrade to 5000 series (in a few years time), it seems 3600 CL16 is better but I need to know that it will first work for the upcoming 3900x.

Thank you very much for your help in advance!

Hi ChatNoir,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply, that is the table I was looking for! I am wondering with the recent releases of Unraid is there any improvement of the support?

If not I think 3200CL14 is the safe option.

3200MHz is indeed the maximal official specification from AMD :

https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-9-3900x

But it can be lower depending on the number and type of RAM sticks :

Unraid 6.9 RC is back on a modern linux kernel (6.8.3 had an old one for compatibility reasons).

It should handle Ryzen better, but 3200MHz is still the safe bet.

You could make your own tests with your specific hardware but more often than not, the officially supported RAM speed and appropriate C-States solve crash issues.

I have 3600 ram in one of my servers with a 3950x and an Asrock 470 taichi ultimate. It worked but i had problems running the ram at 3600. I would sometimes get a lockup. So i just decided to down clock the ram to 3200.

I am glad i have the 3600 ram as it was about the same price as the 3200 so in the future with another build/motherboard i may be more lucky.

So i would go ahead and buy the 3600 then if you have no probs great and if you have a prob then down-clock it to 3200.
