Replace parity with same size drive?

Recommended Posts

Hi, my parity drive is failing, under warranty, and I'll replace it with same size/model drive. How do I do that?

I've seen the wiki article about swapping for a larger parity drive, and the wiki article about replacing a data drive, but nothing about the steps for simply replacing the (single) parity drive with same size.

I'm sure Unraid must make this fairly simple (as they do other drive replacements).

Thank you for any assistance!

Replacing a parity drive is no different to replacing a data drive.

the steps that are sure to work are:

  1. stop array
  2. unassign parity drive
  3. start array to forget old assignments
  4. stop array
  5. assign new parity drive
  6. start array to build new parity on the new drive

i think steps 3 and 4 are probably not needed but they will do not harm.

So, in my case, I'd probably want to:

  1. stop array
  2. un-assign parity drive
  3. start array to forget old assignments
  4. shut down server, take out old parity drive, put new parity drive in its slot, start server
  5. stop array
  6. assign new parity drive
  7. start array to build new parity on the new drive

Of course, I guess I run the risk of data loss if one of the data drives fails while the parity is being re-created.

Sound about right?
