joshallen2k
Hi, new to Unraid. Migrating my Windows 10 Plex (and helper apps) install with 20TB of content to a new Unraid server. Before I buy the parts, appreciate feedback if this build makes sense, where I could/should spend more, etc. The EVGA 1070 and i9-9900K are parts I'm reusing. The Node 804 case is chosen as its a perfect fit for where I need it to go. Most of the drives will be shucked from externals. Would also appreciate commentary on most logical way to set up this drive set in Unraid. trurl
The 10TB would have to be parity since no data disk can be larger than parity. Since the SSDs are different sizes probably makes sense to use Unraid 6.9 and put them in separate pools. Quote Link to comment
joshallen2k
Yes that was the plan to have the 10TB as a parity drive. I may add another 1TB nvme drive, so one 1TB for cache and the other as Plex cache. I suppose I could then just use the 500gb SSD as part of the storage array. Quote Link to comment

Disks in the array can't be trimmed, and can't be written faster than parity. Unraid 6.9 allows multiple pools, each of which can have multiple disks (btrfs raid). So you could have a cache pool for caching user share writes, and another "fast" pool for dockers and VMs. This is how I do it. You want docker and VM specific shares (appdata, domains, system) to reside on faster disks outside the array so they will perform better and not keep array disks spunup. Quote Link to comment
joshallen2k
Thanks for the info. I will repurpose the 500gb SSD into another system. So if I summarize what I should do from a storage perspective: - 10TB HDD as parity drive - All other HDDs as data drive array - 1x 1TB nvme as Unraid cache - 1x 1TB nvme as Plex cache Regarding docker & VM appdata etc shares, would I put those on the nvme I plan to use as Plex cache (which is Plex app data)? Any other comments on the rest of the hardware build, or does that look OK? Thanks! Quote Link to comment
