March 8, 201115 yr Moving a disk from one controller to another does not require a rebuild. You can move your 1tb to another controller, attach you new 2 tb to the port the 1 tb used to occupy, boot, (unRaid may make you adjust the disk configuration), then preclear the 2 tb drive, and add it to the array. No rebuilding. You would need to rebuild to replace the 1tb with the 2 tb and planned to remove the 1 tb from the array.
March 9, 201115 yr Author I see what you mean now. For some weird reason I thought all the data that was on the 1TB drive I was moving needed to be moved onto the 2TB drive, even if I was to install the 1TB in another port. I have one more 2TB drive to install and also want to move the old drive to another port. I'll maybe try what you suggested. Thanks.
April 2, 201115 yr Author This machine is still running quiet and smooth. I'm actually bored since it's all done and there is nothing else for me to do. I've given up on getting FTP to work since I've tried everything I know how and read. Maybe I'll build another box or just rewire this one. I'm bored!
April 2, 201115 yr Is there any difference when flipping the cages so that the LED's are at the bottom? I don't know if this was mentioned in this thread, but I remember reading about trays that were of a newer version with some kind of tab or spring, does that sound familiar?
April 4, 201115 yr You would be able to flip them around with no problem. That's what I thought. What about the iStarUSA trays with the clip/spring, have you read about that?

I know the feeling, that's why I started building servers for others!
April 4, 201115 yr I know the feeling, that's why I started building servers for others! Are you mostly building servers for friends or people online? I never thought there was a large demand for unRAID systems.

A little of both, and you would be surprised how many people want servers, but don't want to build them and deal with the hardware themselves.
April 4, 201115 yr A little of both, and you would be surprised how many people want servers, but don't want to build them and deal with the hardware themselves. Man, hardware is the best part about building an unRAID server. After it's built it just sits in the corner with nothing to do. I need more friends so I can build them servers Are you making a profit on them? (I hope)
April 4, 201115 yr A modest one, yes. As long as there's something to keep you going, especially if it's something you enjoy doing. I know I love building computers, but I on'y do it every 4-5 years or so. I hold onto hardware forever, my XBMC box is a 15+ year old Pentium4 with a modern video card and my main PC is 8-9 years old with a Core2 e2160.
April 15, 201115 yr Opentoe, please post some interior shots. I recently built my server with 3 of the same cages, same blue color even I'm having a terrible time running the data cables through the case since they're all horizontal and spaced out. It also makes running a string of SATA power connectors up/down difficult since the data cable will get in the way. My case is MUCH more cramped than the CM590 too. I actually removed all the fans from the cages since they were ridiculously loud in mine, even on the slow setting. They moved tons of air though. I've noticed that the activity lights don't sow activity when doing the pre-read step of pre-clear script though. I'm colorblind anyways, so the orange and green lights look almost identical to me anyways. Wish they'd gone with blue/red or something else that's distinctly different.
April 20, 201115 yr Author I'll try to get some pictures of the inside this coming weekend. Having my server sitting in the closet makes it tough to take out. That thing weighs A LOT. I do have to say my wiring is NOT clean and neat right now, but will eventually get to it. I agree, the stock fans did pull a lot of good cool air to keep all my drives cool, even at low speeds. Check back...hopefully I'll have something up.
