October 11, 200718 yr OK, I just can't figure this one out, despite spending all day on it! Using unRAID 4.1 I was happily using my Xbox XBMC to access my unRAID user shares. Now that I have upgraded to 4.2.1 and now finally got my Windows network to work with the 'User Level Security' (by specifying the user name in each share's 'Valid users' field) , I just can't get my Xbox XBMC to connect. All I get is a repeated prompt on the Xbox for the SMB username and password. I've even tried completely deleting my XBMC installation and reinstalling a clean stable 2.0.1 release, just in case I had screwed up some XBMC settings. Has anyone else managed to get XBMC working with unRAID 4.2.1 with 'User Level Security' enabled? If so, please help! EDIT: This issue was finally resolved. Refer http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=1088.msg8401#msg8401
October 11, 200718 yr I upgraded to 4.2.1 from 4.2 beta 4 without any issues at all. I didn't have any issues when upgrading from 4.1 to 4.2 - I just had to set the SMB username and password on XBMC. I didn't have to do a thing when upgrading to 4.2.1. Can you give some more details (what users you have specified, etc)? I can't think of a problem off the top of my head
October 11, 200718 yr Author Hi custom, thanks for the quick reply. OK, on unRAID I have created a user and password as username 'xbox' and password 'xbox' (for simplicity), both lowercase. I have added user 'xbox' to my the 'Valid users' field of my 'DVD' User Share. As I also have a user 'greg', this looks ike this: greg, xbox Ok, next I verified that on a PC I had not used before, I could connect to my unRAID 'DVD' folder user share by entering the xbox username and password. So far so good! Now on the Xbox XBMC. If I go to 'Video' and browse the SMB shares, I can successfully browse to my unRAID server (which I have named 'mediaserver'), and when I select the server there is a pause and XBMC asks me for the username and password. I enter 'sbox' for bot the username and password fields, select [OK] button and XBMC goes away briefly, and then just comes back with the same window with the username I entered showing, but the password blanked. I have tried the above with my 'greg' username as well (which is working fien from my various XP and Vista PC's), but same outcome. I also tried setting the default username and password for SMB in the XBMC 'Network' settings, but this changed nothing. Next I tried directly editing the XBMC sources.xml file (from the UserData folder) and entered the following: <bookmark> <name>Mediaserver/DVD</name> <path>smb://xbox:xbox@mediaserver/DVD/</path> </bookmark> ... no luck, just the same repeated prompt for password (with the user name field already showing the specified 'xbox' username). Then tried all other combinations I could think of... eg. - uppercase for the servername. - IP address instead of the servername . - just the server name, without the user share folder name. etc. I even tried other usernames and password combinations, and have re-entered the password in the unRAID 'Users' web page (even though I know it is entered correctly, as I can prove it works from a windows PC using the 'xbox' username and password). As mentioned earlier, I even completed deleted my XBMC installation folder and re-installed the clean downloaded latest stable XBMC 2.0.1 build. No luck! Any suggested welcome. If others have XBMC working with 4.2.1 'User Level Security' enabled, I must be missing something. EDIT: Just to add, if I disable 'User Level Security' everything works fine again in XBMC (with no security obviously).
October 11, 200718 yr Author Well... I've now spent many further hours testing every conceivable combination of settings between the Xbox XBMC and the unRAID 4.2.1 User Level Security settings, and I just can't make it work. No matter what I do I simply get the XBMC (v2.0.1) Lock Preferences window, with the default username in brackets, and a blank password. When I enter the password and select OK, it just comes back with the same window. ie. It appears that XBMC simply cannot logon to the unRAID server. Turn off User Level Security in unRAID and everything works fine from XBMC (just with no network security). There is nothing else I can think to try. So looks like if I want to continue to use my Xbox XBMC media centers, I'm going to have to go without the User Level Security, which defeats the purpose of upgrading from unRAID 4.1. Has anyone really got this working? If so, please give me your exact settings for XBMC & unRAID so I can try and replicate exactly what you have done!
October 12, 200718 yr Make sure you don't have any special characters in your passwords eg !@#$%^ etc, I fell into that trap, it doesn't work.

I'm running XBMC (compiled in June 07) and it works fine with unRAID 4.2.1. now looks like we have set this a little differently though. Lets create a test user called 'aaa' since xbmc will start the entry at a so it'll be a quick test. then password to match. Then under the user tab of unRAID //tower, you've created a test user: aaa, pass: aaa, retype pass: aaa Under the share tab, I've left the Valid user and Invalid user blank. My user shares are still set to Export Read Only as my PC is still mapped out to the Hidden Disk Share. So that's pretty much it and when using xbmc, i've even mapped out the user folder 'movies' right into xbmc so I no longer have to drill down to the //Tower and user folders. At the user/pass prompt, use the test user aaa and see if that works. Good Luck, M
October 13, 200718 yr Author Make sure you don't have any special characters in your passwords eg !@#$%^ etc, I fell into that trap, it doesn't work. Thanks, but no special characters. For testing I was just using a very simple user=xbox password=xbox.

I assume from your description that you did not set the default SMB username and password in the XBMC settings? ie. Instead just entering the credentials when prompted (which I imagine would then be saved for next time in the XBMC sources.xml config file for that specific share). The key diference in what you describe appears to be that you have a blank "Valid user" field in the unRAID User Shares setup. I'm using a simple xbox username and password, but will also try aaa instead (what the heck). I will give this a try which will be interesting, as the reason I have this is that I needed to specify the user in the "Valid User" field for the User Level Security to work from my XP and Vista PC's on my home network (refer my other thread on User Level Security). ie. I will be interesting if this solves the problem for XBMC, but breaks my Windows connectivity again! My share is also set to Export Read Only. Will report back when I have tried your settings...

Yes, I'm prompted to log in every time I turn the xbmc on and prefer that method. Also make sure to Create a User called aaa in the USER Tab of unraid mgmt menu //Tower I'm currently using my unRAID for xbmc for movies, img backup, and file storage from windows OS as well. All works... Regards, M
October 13, 200718 yr Author Yes, I'm prompted to log in every time I turn the xbmc on and prefer that method. Also make sure to Create a User called aaa in the USER Tab of unraid mgmt menu //Tower I'm currently using my unRAID for xbmc for movies, img backup, and file storage from windows OS as well. All works... Regards, M Yes did that... still no luck! I created a user aaa with password aaa (and aaa in retype password field) in the Users tab. Set my DVD User Share to be blank for both Valid Users and Invalid Users, and Export read-only in the Shares tab. Cleared the default username and password in the SMB 'settings' menu of XBMC. Created a <video> bookmark in the XBMC sources.xml config file as: <bookmark> <name>Mediaserver/DVD</name> <path>smb://mediaserver/dvd/</path> </bookmark> NB: My unRAID Server 'Server name' in the Settings tab is 'mediaserver' instead of Tower - but I can't imagine that being an issue as it has been this way since I initially setup my unRAID server. Note also that Workgroup is set to HOME (the name of my windows workgoup), Local master set to default of 'No', and SMB ports set to default of 445 139. OK, when I try and connect from XBMC to the named 'Mediaserver/DVD Video share I get the 'Lock' dialog box and enter aaa for both user name and password fields, then select OK button. There is a pause and the Lock window just re-appears with teh username still showing (aaa) but the password field blank. Retry - same thing! FTP retrieve the xbmc.log file from the Xbox, which has the following log lines: --- 22:05:57 M: 39936000 ERROR: SMBDirectory->GetDirectory: Unable to open directory : 'smb://aaa:aaa@mediaserver/dvd' unix_err:'7' nt_err : 'c0000022' error : 'Access denied' 22:05:57 M: 39936000 ERROR: CGUIMediaWindow::GetDirectory(smb://mediaserver/dvd/) failed --- Also try connecting from the XBMC using the white button to manually add a share in the My Videos section. Browse the network successfully and select 'HOME' workgroup followed by 'MEDIASERVER' from the list of servers located. Same thing happens.. pause, prompt for Lock window (username and password), enter aaa for both and window just returns with the password blanked again. I am using the lastest stable XBMC (XBMC-2.0.1-FINAL-FAT-T3CH.rar). Should I see if there is a later test build to try? unRAID is of course unRAID Pro 4.2.1 (confirmed in the web management panel). I am a technical guy (I'm an IT Manager and long time Software Developer), so generally know what I am doing, but this one has me stumped at the moment! As I said before, if I disable 'User Level Security' everthing works fine, so it is not a networking or connectivity issue. Perhaps the only remaining difference is that my unRAID server is named 'mediaserver' instead of the default 'tower', although that should have absolutely nothing to do with it (unless Tom has 'tower' hardwired in the code somewhere?). Any suggestions what I should try next?
October 13, 200718 yr Koolkiwi, I just looked up XBMC 2.0.1 from T3CH and that's a Nov 2006 release. Files are different size all together as well, I've ran XBMC 2.0.1. FInal SLIM T3CH prior to copying the May 2007 release over it. If you could upgrade to the latest or the same release as mine to put possible xbmc issues to bed. I'm running the May 2007, not sure what version it is... doesn't seem to say in the txt or folders and do not have the .rar file. As for the name of your unRAID, mine is called nas1u... \\nas1u or //nas1u for the management web page. So I doubt the name has anything to do w/ it. Once you copy the May 2007 release of xbmc, if you're having difficulty finding that release incase another came out, PM me and i might be able to locate it. Once we have the same versions lined up, I'm sure it's some simple setting we might be overlooking. Regards, M PS, Curious, have you tried the user root and it's pass?
October 13, 200718 yr Dont use that version. Its ancient and lacks a HUGE number of features and fixes. Use the lastest t3ch
October 13, 200718 yr Author I'm running XBMC (compiled in June 07) and it works fine with unRAID 4.2.1. I grabbed the latest XBMC-SVN_2007-10-07_rev10457-T3CH.rar build overnight after my last post. I've just woken up, so I'll install it now and see what happens. I had previously been using a much older XBMC build (which was working fine for my needs) and only recently upgraded to the latest stable (2.0.1), which as noted is now quite old (Nov 2006). I will report back soon. Thanks for your help mola (and for your post also NASUser)...
October 14, 200718 yr I haven't been able to access the unRAID from XBMC interface (using browse) for some time. I've had to add any new disks via the source.xml file. Not sure if this is connected or not and sorry not to be more help. This is one of the reasons I haven't upgraded to the latest release (unRAID), because I released having security set would cause problems. Hope you can resolve this...and let us know what you find.
October 14, 200718 yr Author Still no joy! Things looked positive when I checked the XBMC changelog and noted the following from Feb 07: -- 2007-02-26 7925 fixed: MD5 routines fixed, resulting in SMB being fixed. (thanks elupus!) -- I even completely deleted my XBMC folder and copied the latest build across as a fresh new install. The interface on XBMC has some visual improvements when accessing SMB shares (so I know it is definately a newer version), but I have the exact same problem now matter how I try to add or access the folder share from XBMC. ie. I get the Lock window, enter the correct name and password, then after a pause I just get the lock window back again with the password blanked. The XMBC log always shows the same mesage of Access Denied, as per my post above. Nothing is logged in the syslog at the unRAID end ( I ran the tail -f /var/log/syslog command via telnet to monitor for any logging while I tried to access the share from the XBMC), but this may just be because security access attempts are not logged? It would be useful if we could enable some detailed logging as it may provde some clues as to why the connection is failing (on the assumption that the Access Denied message at the XBMC end may be a generic error message... eg. could it be a timeout etc.?). I thought I nearly had it solved when I turned off User Level Security, then setup the XBMC share with the appropriate username and password (which worked fine even with security disabled). After proving all was working fine via the password enabled XBMC source (with unRAID user level security disabled), I re-enabled the user level security and on XBMC I was able to exit out to the main menu and then re-browse the shares perfectly. However, after a short while it prompted again for the lock username and password and I was back to square one! It appears that perhaps the prior connection continued to work until it perhaps timed out, at which point it needed the logon credentials again to reconnect. flambot: I have tried all methods I can conceive of to add / specify the shares, including directly editing sources.xml, using the browse option, manually adding the share via the XMBC gui, using uppercase and lowercase, for the server and share names, including or excluding trailing '\' etc. etc. Still no joy. mola: I might go and see if I can find the May 2007 release you mentioned, do you know specifically which build you are using successfully? (although I feel I am clutching at straws here). AT the end of the day, if you have success with this, we must be able to replicate your setup.
October 14, 200718 yr I've read quite a lot of posts about network connection problems with XBMC - especially with some of the latest releases. Mine used to work fine as well, then one day while trying to add a couple of new drives as source options, I found I couldn't connect to the unRAID via XBMC's "browse" and "Network location" buttons. In fact, I get a long string of numbers citing an "Error", but I do not know what that error is. It is on the to-do list, but unfortunately all my spare time has been devoted to backing up - as opposed to playing with XBMC. I have to chase up the devs on this one for an answer. They don't seem to think anything is wrong on their end (seen lots of posts). The reality - as I could add them via the sources.xml file I didn't worry, but I realise this will have to be resolved to upgrade to 4.2.1 if I want security set. On a positive note, if you're new to the latest XMBC releases, you have been missing out on a lot. The new TV side is fantastic - especially using wide icons. Using "thetvdb.com" as a scraper makes for a wonderful on-screen experience through XBMC. And some of the new skins under development really rock! Really hope you get this sorted.

OK, Not about to give up after all the time invested so far, so I located and installed a May 2007 build of XBMC (XBMC-SVN_2007-05-20_rev9030-T3CH.rar). Interesting to note that the sources.xml is a different format (eg. <source> instead of <bookmark>). Once again, no luck. Same issue as always - won't accept the username and password! No I hadn't tried the root user and password, but I have now with no luck. Good suggestion though, which also points out that although I think I've tried everything possible, there's something I hadn't tried! Any thoughts as to what I could try next? We must be close to exhausting all the possibilities? If Tom implemented a way to log all detail of the security handshake at the unRAID end, this might give us some clues. Your success still keeps me optomistic that we can find the solution.
October 14, 200718 yr delee the sources.xml. reboot use XBMC GUI to browse your network and add a share. it will create the xml for you in the exact forma
October 14, 200718 yr Author delee the sources.xml. reboot use XBMC GUI to browse your network and add a share. it will create the xml for you in the exact forma Thanks NASUse, I did exactly that. Note that I can only create the shares via the GUI when the unRAID User level security is disabled, at which time I enter the username and password (even though it is not needed at that point). Connection works fine, until I re-enable the User level security, then back to the XBMC 'lock' window prompting repeatedly for the username / password and not letting me proceed. The resulting (GUI created) sources.xml looks like this: -- <sources> <myprograms> <default></default> </myprograms> <video> <default></default> <bookmark> <name>DVD on Mediaserver</name> <path>smb://xbox:xbox@MEDIASERVER/DVD/</path> </bookmark> </video> <music> <default></default> </music> <pictures> <default></default> </pictures> <files> <default></default> <bookmark> <name>C Drive</name> </bookmark> <bookmark> <name>DVD Drive</name> </bookmark> <bookmark> <name>E Drive</name> </bookmark> <bookmark> <name>F Drive</name> </bookmark> <bookmark> <name>Q Drive</name> </bookmark> </files> </sources> -- Note that as mentioned above I have created a username 'xbox' with password 'xbox' in the Users tab of unRAID. This user works fine from a WIndows share, so I know it is entered correctly. My unRAID server has a Server name of 'mediaserver' in the Settings tab, and I have a User Share named 'DVD' showing in the Shares tab, with Export read-only and Valid users set to blank (I have tried also specifying xbox as a Valid user). I have also tried combinations of lower and uppercase.
October 15, 200718 yr >Thanks NASUse, I did exactly that. Note that I can only create the shares via the GUI when the unRAID User level security is disabled Quick question, when you search your network using the xbmc GUI, you should see other PC's including your windows and unRaid. I take it you are able to see this and saying only when you select your unRaid NAS you're getting the prompt yes? So you're using WORKGROUP (SMB) Network yes? When I saw NASUsers post about deleting the source xml and thought that would do the trick but guess not. So as long as you have the same version as mine May 2007 of xbmc then it is possible for this to work since I am using the May 2007 version. Before we start looking at the //unRAID settings... could you take a look at your XBMC folder under UserData for possible XML docs that could be getting in the way. This reminds me of a situation where my slideshows (picture) on one xbmc was visually different than my other xbmc. I've initially copied xbmc over again to the one I didn't like and still the same, even deleted the entire xbmc folder and recopied and the same situation. It bother me a bit and I've even thought maybe it's because one was a hard vs softmod but it turned out it was my setting. I had both xbmc running in the same room (projector & TV) going through each settings one by one. I thought XBMC settings were only stored in ...\XBMC\UserData\ but it looks like it also saves files outside of it's folder. If I didn't go through my Picture slideshow issue, I would have jumped to think it's something else but knowing what I went through once w/ the picture slideshow, I believe it's a setting on the xbmc. I'm not sure if i can upload pictures here but I'd like to take pics of my xbmc settings and upload them, or email them to you so you can compare. If you dont mind a large email, PM me with your email address or maybe someone could suggest a way to upload pics. By the way, I just tried the SMB Client setup and that works as well. While we wait for me to get some pics of my setup to you to compare, how is your unRAID setup? Each Tab to Tab, no need to list all users since we're using the test user 'aaa'
October 15, 200718 yr Author Quick question, when you search your network using the xbmc GUI, you should see other PC's including your windows and unRaid. I take it you are able to see this and saying only when you select your unRaid NAS you're getting the prompt yes? So you're using WORKGROUP (SMB) Network yes? Yes, when I browse the network from the XBMC GUI I see my workgroup (HOME), and after selecting the HOME workgroup I see a list of the PC's on my network including my unRAID server (which appears in the list as MEDIASERVER). I can access any of the shared folders on my PC's via this method, as well as the User Shares on my unRAID server, when the 'User level security' is disabled. If I have User level security enabled, the unRAID MEDIASERVER still appears in the HOME workgroup list, but when I try to select it to view the shared folders I get the lock window username / password prompt as described - which will not accept the user and password setup on the unRAID web interface. Note that I deleted the entire XBMC folder from my Xbox hard drive first. Once deleted I copied across the entire new XBMC folder that was contained in the downloaded May .rar release. This did not come with any sources.xml file, so initially there was no sources.xml file in the E:\Apps\XBMC\UserData folder. So, when I went into the XBMC GUI Video menu there was initially no sources defined (only the 'Add Source' option). To create the sources.xml file that I posted above, I had to disable User level security on unRAID so that I could successfully browse to my \\MEDIASERVER\DVD User Share via the XBMC GUI Add SOurce 'browse' option. While doing this I entered the both the username and password as 'xbox' (which I have been using for testing instead of 'aaa'). This was accepted fine, even though User level security was currently disabled so no password was actually needed. The result was the sources.xml file being created as posted above. After going back to the unRAID web configuration and enablng User Level Security (which made my earliier 'xbox' user re-appear on the web Users page), would then try and select the created 'DVD on Mediaserver' source via the XBMC GUI, and after a pause would simply have the lock window appear with the 'xbox' username preloaded - appearing as (xbox), but with the password blank (presumably as it had not been accepted. After re-entering the password, the lock window still just re-appears with the password again blanked - ie. I cannot access the unRAID User Shares! When I saw NASUsers post about deleting the source xml and thought that would do the trick but guess not. So as long as you have the same version as mine May 2007 of xbmc then it is possible for this to work since I am using the May 2007 version. If I didn't go through my Picture slideshow issue, I would have jumped to think it's something else but knowing what I went through once w/ the picture slideshow, I believe it's a setting on the xbmc. As noted, I used a completely new XBMC directory install by first deleting the entire XBMC folder from the Xbox hard drive, and copying the XBMC folder from the distribution .rar. There are a few .xml files in the installed UserData folder, but no sources.xml file is included. I have viewed the contents of the other .xml files but they appear to be fine (eg. keymap.xml etc.). By this I assume you mean setting the default SMB username and password via the XBMC GUI 'settings' ... 'network' ... 'SMB Client' config screen? I have also tried this, and not that the way XBMC works is that if you specify the default SMB username it automatically gets added to the source.xml source links as the username:password for each GUI added share. The end result is still the same for me. I will PM you my email address. While we wait for me to get some pics of my setup to you to compare, how is your unRAID setup? Each Tab to Tab, no need to list all users since we're using the test user 'aaa' This will need to wait until tomorrow night. It's almost midnight Monday here, and I have another day of work tomorrow morning.
October 21, 200718 yr I've sent setting pics just yesterday and today, we'll see if that helps to line up his xbmc w/ unRAID.
October 21, 200718 yr I've sent setting pics just yesterday and today, we'll see if that helps to line up his xbmc w/ unRAID. Cool.
December 20, 200718 yr Author W00T! I got so frustrated trying to figure out why this was not working, back in October, that I actually gave up! (I don't often give-up). However, I just read the post here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=1247.0 With thanks to BubbaQ Guess what... problem finally solved! It seems that unRAID is hardwiring the nameserver as 192.168.1.1 in the /etc/resolv.conf file. Therefore, if you are using anything but the 192.168.1.0/24 network with a gateway address of 192.168.1.1 for your network, then you will have poor response from your SMB browsing. I suspect therefore that this was also resulting in a timeout for XBMC connectivity. So the problem was solved by adding (in my case) the following lines to the end of my /boot/config/go script (ie. on the flash drive): echo nameserver 192.168.157.1 > /etc/resolv.conf echo 192.168.157.22 mediaserver >> /etc/hosts NB. My network is 192.168.157.0/24 with my unRAID server named 'mediaserver' on static IP 192.168.157.22 TOM: Please supply a permanent fix in the next release. The unRAID server's network address details are configured in the unRAID web admin 'settings' page, so the correct entries should be automated for setting the /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf files.
