Fatal Flash Drive Error - Unraid still up and running - please help with next steps

Featured Replies

I've been using Unraid for a very long time but I am far from a Linux expert, so please go easy on me.  I am good at following directions though and fairly computer savvy (I was able to follow spaceinvader ones tutorial to get a Windows 10 VM up and running with VGA passthrough).

Last night when I was booting up one of my computers I got a message telling me it couldn't connect to one of my network drives.  When I went to look to see what was happening it wasn't connecting to the flash drive.  I thought that was odd, checked on a different PC and had the same issue.  Was looking at the Unraid WebUi and I clicked the Apps tab I get a pop up telling me "Fatal Flash Drive Error".  Additionally, on the dashboard the flash drive doesn't show up (pretty sure it used to be listed there).  The flash drive does show up on the Main tab, not sure if that is important but I figured I'd share.  I also have a "System notifications are disabled. Click here to change notification settings." banner at the top of the screen, even if I enable them it immediately disables them again.

I still have full access to the array and my Windows 10 VM is still up and running.

I do not have a recent backup of the flash drive but I do have an older one.  So, I do have a copy of my Pro.key file.  From what I understand though I don't want to use at least some of the settings from that old backup or I will lose data (definitely don't want that).  If it comes to it, are there some settings that I can safely use or should I just stick with the Pro.key?

Since everything is still up and running, I took screenshots of all the drive assignments and what not, pretty much took screenshots of ever page of the WebUi to be safe.

What I am wondering is if this is what I should do next, the server is currently up and running.

Shut down the server, pull the flash drive and run chkdsk disk on it or see if I can copy the files off of it to migrate to a new flash drive.  This flash drive is fairly old, ~7 years.

If chkdsk works do I just plug it back in and reboot and all will be peachy?

If it is truly dead and I have to migrate to a new flash drive do I get a fresh copy from here, add my Pro.key and when I boot up just make sure my drive assignments are correct and I'll be good to go?  What I am also really worried about is my VM, while I did get it up and running it was no small task for me so I am really hoping I don't have to go through it all again.

The timing for all of this couldn't have been worse.  I just had a disk report an error and received a replacement in the mail yesterday (not sure if that was completely necessary but I figured an error was a good signal to upgrade to a bigger disk).  I had also received a new cache drive so I could make it considerably bigger.  Going to get it all back up and running before tackling those two things though.

I have attached a diagnostics as well, was able to pull one with the server in the state that it is in now.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Forgot to mention running 6.7.2

Did you happen to pull out the flash drive last night?  The flash disconnected.  A reboot is your recourse

Thanks for the reply.

I did not, one of my cats may have knocked it or something though.  I checked it last night and it seemed to be in there snug.

Am I safe trying for a reboot?

Shutdown, remove flash, put in your PC, checkdisk, make a flash backup, reboot.

Post new diagnostics.

Done and done.  checkdisk didn't find any errors.  Everything booted right back up and I have no errors on the WebUi. VM came right back up as well.  It is running a parity check, but that's cool.

I wasn't sure if I should have run diagnostics before or after restarting the array so I did both.  Here they are.

Everything look good?  Thank you all so much, really appreciate it.

Which disk did you say had an error? None are disabled or unmountable. Do any show SMART warnings on the Dashboard page?

Recommend booting from USB2 port if your aren't already. USB2 is less likely to have this problem and speed is of no consequence for this purpose.

You should upgrade before tackling any other changes.

It was disk 5 that threw the error.  It didn't redball, I just got a notification showing it had an error and the error column on main tab showed 1 error for disk 5.

Dashboard page currently shows healthy for all drives in the SMART column.

Flash drive is plugged into a USB2 and always has been.

I was going to upgrade when I put in the new disks.  I tend to go with the philosophy of if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Do you have Notifications setup to alert you immediately by email or other agent when a problem is detected?

upgrade

Latest Unraid supports multiple pools for SSDs which is one reason I suggested upgrade before new disks.

And many plugins no longer support your old version, including Community Applications:

Yes, I do.  Via email.

I am going to upgrade when I update my cache drive and put in the new disk.  I am always terrified it's going to break something though, especially my VM which is why I am always reluctant to do so.  Probably stupid of me, but yeah.

Everything else look okay in my diagnostic?  I am assuming from the lack of comments that everything must be good.

Thank you for the help, it truly is appreciated.

And be sure to read the release notes. There are some new features regarding cache that you might want to take advantage of and it might be simpler to set some of that up while you already have the new cache installed.
