New i3 Build

Featured Replies

It's been a year since I have began pposting here and considering going with unraid.  I have picked up six or seven 2TB hard drives over the past year.  I was planning to use an existing MB, processor and RAM that I am currently using, but it turns out this computer has all of a sudden become very critical and I can't take it down so I am getting reimbursed for a new MB, processor and RAM.  This is what I will have:

I know that the power supplies are not single rail, but hopefully since I have 2 of them I will be OK.  Does anyone see anything glaringly wrong with this build?  The MB, processor and RAM are set to arrive on Friday so I will be able to get everything put together this weekend.

thanks,

Murray

Any comments or opinions?

I have been running unRAID on a DH55TC with i3-530 for eight months.  The TC is simply the uATX equivalent of the HC (I'm also running an HC with i5-650 in another machine).

I have experienced no problems and am very happy with this configuration.

You need to think about how to link the power supplies.  The grounds (0 volts) should be common.  The second supply will not start up at all unless also connected its Power On signal to the Power On signal that goes into the first from the motherboard.

To be honest, two independent power supplies is a fairly risky strategy.  I would not recommend it unless you really understand the risks and implications.

Les.

Just curious why you chose that case.  It only has 11 external 5.25" drive bays.  Why not go with the Antec 1200? It has 12 external 5.25" bays so you could fit for of the 5-in-3 units in there.

I have had this running for 3+ years in my current traditional raid system, so I think I am OK.  The case was designed for dual power supplies and came with a cable to connect the two.

I already have that case and have been using it in another build for 3 or 4 years.  I don't see my needs ever exceeding 15 drives, and as my storage requirements grow, so will the available disk sizes.
