meep
AFP support has arrived in unraid just in time, it appears. This report indicated Samba will no longer be distributed with Mac OSX client or server starting with the upcoming Lion; http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/03/23/inside_mac_os_x_10_7_lion_server_apple_replaces_samba_for_windows_networking_services.html Link to comment
meep
On further reading, it transpires that it's not so much a complete removal of support for smb, just that Samba won't be bundled and they're writing their own implementation of the protocol. Panic averted. Move along now, nothing to see here. Link to comment
prostuff1
It appears that this whole thing was brought about because of the move to GPLv3 by the samba team... My only concern... would this not effect unRAID also? Link to comment
S80_UK
It appears that this whole thing was brought about because of the move to GPLv3 by the samba team... My only concern... would this not effect unRAID also? Why would it? I am sure that Apple's uses for Samba and LimeTech's are likely very different. It would not be a surprise if the things that Apple needs to do with Samba are not compatible with GPLv3 (perhaps for their own reasons, such as protecting their own IP), whereas they may have been previously. The chances are that LimeTech use Samba pretty much as is, and if they didn't they could probably still comply. Caveats: 1 - this is all speculation (has to be since I don't have eyes and ears in either company). 2 - I am not a lawyer etc. Link to comment
