No longer able to access UnRaid from network!

Featured Replies

For some reason, I am no longer able to access my UnRaid server from my network. I have been using the build in FTP server and Samba daily for a few months now. I thought I saw a message in RED at the bottom of the local machine running the server saying something about check the network cable. I replaced it but still no connections. My NIC is on the motherboard and is connected via cable to my Deco Mesh router. Is there a diagnostic file that I can generate which can lead me to an answer?

TIA

Do you have a monitor and keyboard attached?  IF you do, you can login and type

diagnostics

at the Command Line Prompt.  That will write the Diagnostics file to the  logs  directory/folder on the boot flash drive.

You can type

poweroff

and shutdown the server down.  Then pull the flash drive and upload the file with your next post.

If it won't shutdown, you can try a quick punch of the server power button to see if that will do a clean shutdown.  Otherwise, push the power button until a 'dirty' shutdown occurs.

I looked at your Diagnostics file and realized that it was right after a reboot.  Were you having the problem at the time when you captured the file?

By the way, your IP address is 10.0.0.51  if there is any question about it.

There is also a reference to a 'Firewall'

Sep 30 06:20:26 UnRaid emhttpd: shcmd (69): /etc/rc.d/rc.docker start
Sep 30 06:20:26 UnRaid root: starting dockerd ...
Sep 30 06:20:29 UnRaid kernel: Bridge firewalling registered
Sep 30 06:20:29 UnRaid avahi-daemon[9351]: Joining mDNS multicast group on interface docker0.IPv4 with address 172.17.0.1.

Is this something you setup?

In trying to resolve my problem, I rebooted into safe mode and ran a diagnostics. Then I ran one in full on mode. No, I didn't intentionally set up a firewall. I set up a static address of 10.0.0.12 in my router for the UnRaid machine. As far as I know, nothing was tampered with recently, that's why I am surprised by this current issue.

I sent you the report generated in full mode.

Is it at all possible to do a reinstall without losing my shares?

Yes, but the problem is that if it is a hardware problem,, it won't be fixed...  Basically, you make a screen print of the drive assignments on the 'Main' screen (and, perhaps, screen prints of the other setting pages if you make changes to them)  and then backup the flash drive to your PC.  Then prepare a flash drive with a new setup.  You will have to copy over the   .key   file   from the     /config    folder from the backup to the    /config    folder on the new drive.  After booting up the new flash drive use the screen prints to assign the drives to same location using the drive serial numbers.

But I found that there was an address of 10.0.0.51 and that was assigned by DHCP.   In the normal situation, the last thing on the boot screen is the IP address that your server is using.  (This is right above the login prompt when the boot process is finished on the console monitor.)  Routers vary in how they handle static IP addresses.  The better ones 'know' the MAC address of your NIC and will assign that IP address to the NIC with that MAC address.  The cheaper, older ones just remove that address from the DHCP pool of addresses and depend on you to statically assign that address on the computer.

We really need a Diagnostics file when the problem is actually happening.

One more thing, it does not hurt to reboot the switches and routers when problems like this occur.  Yours would not be the first case to be 'fixed' by a reboot of these devices.  (after all, they are nothing but small computers dedicated to a single purpose...)

I agree. I rebooted both the router and the cable modem. Also replaced the cable. Does the fact that there is led activity on the on board ethernet mean anything? I also noticed briefly that a message saying ethernet adapter is offline, check the cable. Or something like that. I'll order one as my box of pc junk surprised me by not having a spare. I also have a USB wifi adapter plugged in but I don't know if it is being recognized by UnRaid.

This morning I now see the server is on the network as 10.0.0.31, but I cannot access it. Ping returns a general failure as well. You mentioned a firewall?

Btw, the diagnostic file that I sent was when the situation IS happening. I have to been unable to connect to UnRaid since a week or so.

Log into your server at the console.  At the command line, type:

ping 8.8.8.8

<CTRL-C> will stop it if necessary.

That is a bit unusual.   Most routers tend to assign the same IP address to a computer...

Did you swap the cat5/6 cable to another port on the switch.  (I have had ports go bad on switches in the past.)

I have only 2 ports on the Deco router. One goes to the cable modem.  You gave me an idea. I will swap two of the three Decos. Maybe the one does have a bad port. I will ping later.

Thank you very highly for your help and hints! I swapped a couple of the Deco M5 units and presto! Problem fixed.

well I might have been a bit premature with the previous post.  I can access UnRaid on my Android cell and my wife's Android tablet now but still cannot connect using my Win 10 notebook. I'm looking into it now

Is your win10 on the same subnet as your server?

Looks to be

192.168.68.141

255.255.255.0

192.168.68.1

Ah, Windows 10.  If it is a SMB issue, Be sure to read this:

MS updates to Windows 10 can break SMB connectivity if you are trying to run in the minimum security mode.

If it is GUI access that is giving your problems, tell us what error messages you are getting.

Removed the IP stack from Windows and put back in. UnTaid briefly showed up then disappeared.  Finally traced it to a firewall issue with Windows.  Don't get me started on Windows.

All good now (so far)
