Copying/Moving files on the unraid box.

Featured Replies

Being a complete Linux virgin is there a way (possibly using putty) to copy/move files internally on the unraid box (not over the network) but using user shares not direct disk to disk. I am basically saying I want to copy a file from one directory to another without having to know which disk it is on or will be going to and not have the overhead of a Windows gui copy and 2 network passes.

If the user shares are both allowed to use the same disks and you MOVE from one user share to the other it will not transfer over the network. Samba will simply update the hard drives tables to change the directory the files are in.

In fact, when you do this it will even over-ride the split level setting for the user shares and leave the files on the same disk even when the share settings have specified a different disk.

Thanks Peter understand for a move but what about a copy

Connect with putty and enter mc.

Please excuse my noviceness, but this (midnight commander?) will be a command line won't it?

What parameters will be needed

Can someone explain this?

Say I'm using Total Commander with the source (disk 1) and destination (disk 2) dirs open on either side of the program. Select a file, press F6 for move.

Is it being said that this type of transfer moves the data out of the server, then back to it?

Who said? They are lying. Don't believe them.

Who's lying?

Total Commander = a Shareware file manager for Windows

The move will involve the network if you move from one disk to another using a program running on a Windows machine.

The move will not involve the network if you move the file location on the same disk using Windows Explorer.

The move will not involve the network if you move from one disk to another using a telnet program to give the file move commands directly on the unRAID machine.

They were not lying. I though he meant MC (not TC). Too many beers last night.

Too many beers last night.

Hold your tongue, it is darn near impossible to have "too many" beers.  ;):P
