Copy configuration to new USB drive

Featured Replies

I am currently experimenting with the free version on my own usb key.  I'm at the point now where I've made modifications to the config like adding "unmenu" and email notifications.  I need now to play with user level security and rsync capability to see if Unraid capabilities meet my requirements.  (Unfortunatly I have to spend money just to test user level security capibilities and that sucks very very much).  Anyhow, my question is if I were to purchase a USB key from Limetech, what files do I want to copy from my trial key and what files do I not want to copy from my trial key to the new USB key????

Any help appreciated.

Wiki, how to, backup of ....

I read the "how to" on the WIKI prior to posting, but the instructions are so terse that I wasn't sure if they were complete.

So, If I assume that they are complete then I should only have to copy the 'config/super.dat' and 'config/disk.cfg' from my old key to my new, shiny, pro version key and everything will work???  It just seems too simple.

I'm guessing you would also want to copy

network.cfg

ident.cfg

If the next three exist in your /boot/config folder you might want to copy them too.

passwd

group

smbpasswd

From what I understand, the "key" you purchase is a registration file that can be installed in the config folder to enable the additional drive capability and security features.  With that in mind, unless you are purchasing a "Preconfigured USB Flash drive" the registration key would go on your existing flash drive and you would not need too move anything to a different USB flash drive.

Are you planning to install unRaid on a different USB Flash drive from the one where you have done your initial testing?

If you are purchasing a USB Flash drive already preconfigured, then you need to move the few files mentioned.  If you plan on using your own USB flash drive you must supply its serial number when you go to purchase the registration key.  The file Tom sends you will then unlock unRaid's features when installed on that USB drive.  If that USB flash drive is different than the one you currently use, then you need to copy the few files.

Since Tom supplies 512 Meg flash drives, I personally would not buy a preconfigured drive, but instead use a 1 Gig or bigger flash drive of my own. (It will just have more room to add features)

You might want to try this 4.2beta4 version of unRaid.  It has user-shares security still enabled so you can experiment. It was the version immediately before 4.2.1.

Download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?0mce3mdtmd2

Now, it does have one problem.  The version of samba on it has a bug that causes occasional network disconnects when writing to the unRaid server for some users, for others, the disconnects never seemed to occur.  (it is the reason that 4.2.1 was released)

You can work around that problem by saving a copy of /usr/sbin/smbd from your 4.2.1 drive to the /boot folder on your flash drive and then adding a few lines to the end of your "go" script to stop samba, have it copy the working version from /boot to /usr/sbin/smbd as described in this thread  http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=1021.msg7117#msg7117  (read the thread from the beginning to get an idea of the issue... we tried several ways to copy in the smbd file... the first example did not stop the process and did not copy the file because it was in use.  The later example stopped samba, waited for it to stop, copied smbd, then restarted samba before starting emhttp in the "go" script.)

If you unzip the 4.2beta4 file you should only need to copy bzroot and bzimage from the unzipped folder to your flash drive and then stop the array and reboot to load it.

As far as I know, the 4.2beta4 is identical to 4.2.1 other than the newer version of smbd in 4.2.1, and the change to not enable user-shares security unless you have a key file.  Granted, you will still have to purchase a key to expand your array and to get any new features, but you should get a feel for how security works.  You will need to add the commands to copy the fixed version of smbd into place, or deal with the buggy version's occasional disconnects when writing a file to the unRaid server, but if you are handy with an editor you should be fine.

Another way to downrev, is to just copy emhttp from the appropriate prior version of unRAID (4.2Beta) to the flash, and edit the go script to run emhttp from the flash instead of the root filesystem.

Running emhttp from the flash and deleting it from the file system would also make the entire bzroot initramfs free of non-GPL'd software so people could modify their bzroot (such as add Apache, mySQL, Slimserver, NTop, etc.) and then share their customizations by simply sharing their customized bzroot files.

Joe,

You are a "Hero Member".  What a great reply.  Thank you.

I had been planning on purchasing 2 pro keys.  One for production and one for development.  Now, you have me thinking I should stick with the 1gb key I already have and just activate it.
