Preclear plugin
I've precleared several drives with this plugin in the past with no issue. Lately I've been trying to preclear 3 new Hitachi HDS5C4040ALE630 4TB drives. On each attempt they fail on either the pre-read or post-read. All three drives are passing extended SMART tests. I've tried on 2 different SATA ports (with different cables). Did something change in one of the recent updates? I'm having a difficult time believing that I managed to acquire 3 brand new drives that are all bad.

Well... maybe... but maybe not. The preclear report said: == Disk /dev/sdi has NOT been successfully precleared == Postread detected un-expected non-zero bytes on disk== Basically, it wrote all zeros to the disk, but when it went to read them back to verify the write was successful, there were some bytes that were not zero. That is a very bad thing, since you cannot rely on the disk to store your data accurately. Nor can you rebuild any other failed disk accurately if one were to fail. I would try a parity check at this point. It might have an error or two as it expected all zeros... Joe L. I completed a parity check. Almost as quickly as i started the check it found and corrected 1 error. It completed in 14 hours without finding any more errors. I'm thinking 1 error is nothing to worry about. I'm not sure how to get any more assurance that my drives are okay. These were the first pre-clears that I performed on v6b12. I find it strange that I got the same result on two different brand new drives.

Preclear.sh results - Questions about your results? Post them here.
So, I just finished preclearing 2 drives. In both cases, the result was such as "Disk /dev/sdk has NOT been successfully precleared". I don't fully understand why. I tried adding one of the precleared drives to my array and there was no issue. I've attached the preclear logs. I'm using preclear_disk.sh v1.15 on unRAID v6b12. If I'm able to add the drives to my array with no problem, should I be Okay? PL1311LAG14UWA.zip WD-WMC5D0D0MDMK.zip

I am absolutely amazed at the effort and detail that you guys put into your replies to my questions. Thank you so much for all the good information. I feel very confident now with my future server upgrade plans.

Makes good sense. Thank you very much for the complete explanation. Now, I have to find a 8-port PCIe card to replace my 8-port PCI card. Does anyone listening to this thread have a suggestion they can offer?

JarDo, could you be more specific on the hard drives: how many of each, what size & RPM they are, and which controller each one is connected to? Here are the details of my drives. Something clearly needs adjustment -- that's even slower than I'd expect with PCI controllers. Detail your hardware configuration and what disk drives you're using. That kind of speed sounds like IDE drives with 40-wire cables !! But that's VERY unlikely on a system with an i5. Another thought: Are you running RC16c? There was an issue with > 4GB of RAM in an earlier release candidate that caused very slow speeds. If you're not running the latest RC, upgrade to it and run the test again. Sorry, I forgot to mention that I am running RC16c. I'm guessing that the PCI SATA controller card is my issue Full Details of my hardware config include: SUPERMICRO AOC-SAT2-MV8 64-bit PCI-X133MHz SATA II (3.0Gb/s) Controller Card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815121009 MSI Z87-G43 LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX High Performance CF Gaming Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130694 Intel Core i5-4670K Haswell 3.4GHz LGA 1150 84W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80646I54670K http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116899 Patriot Signature 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory with heatshield Model PSD38G1600KH http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220570 Other than that, I have an 11-drive 15.5TB system supported with a 4TB Parity drive. Wow, I think I need to make some hardware modifications. I'm not even coming close to the throughput others are reporting. I ran in full auto mode and the best I could get was 18.7 MB/s. I've got a quad-core i5 processor with 8GB ram. My issue must be the HD controller. Best Bang for the Buck: Test 3 with a speed of 18.5 MB/s Tunable (md_num_stripes): 1664 Tunable (md_write_limit): 768 Tunable (md_sync_window): 768

No. Nothing new. In spite of promises to address any issues with missing libraries there has been no response.

cache_dirs - an attempt to keep directory entries in RAM to prevent disk spin-up
I am running Cache_Dirs v1.6 from an unmenu "go script" as follows: /boot/custom/bin/cache_dirs -w -B -i "Media" I then have a cron job that checks for duplicate files between disks of a share once per hour. If a dupe is found a notification is sent to me (via SMS) and then I execute the following to stop the cache_dirs process: /boot/custom/bin/cache_dirs -q >>/var/log/syslog 2>&1 The problem is that the process is not stopping. If I telnet to my server and attempt to restart cache_dirs I receive an error that it is already running. Then after stopping the process from the terminal I am able to restart. Is there some special way that I should be stopping the process when in a shell script???

Using Hamachi VPN with Unraid
I don't know a lot about kernel modules, but it seems that in order to get this package to run a /dev/net/tun device needs to exist on the server. I tried to add it via command line instructions I found on the net, but failed with the 'modprobe tun' step. It errors with "FATAL: Module tun not found." It seems that something related to tun is already installed on the server, because running /usr/sbin/tuncfg (a step required prior to starting Hamachi) does work. But then if I issue a 'hamachi start' command I get the following: 03 13:35:32.199 [ 0] [12352] tap: bad response from tuncfg - 02000013 03 13:35:32.200 [ 0] [12352] open('/dev/net/tun') failed with 19 (No such device) Some additional info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TUN/TAP https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/unable-to-install-a-tuntap-driver-on-a-2.6.18-kernel-slackware-11-505831/

Using Hamachi VPN with Unraid
Has anyone figured out how to get hamachi running on unraid. It would seem to me that the ~/.hamachi directory files would need to be relocated to the flash drive somehow. Or hamachi would need to be reconfigured everytime unraid was re-booted. I was wondering if anyone has done this yet?
