February 12, 20224 yr Joining the unRAID community and building my first server (congratulate me I guess ). I was looking for a decent USB boot drive when I accidentally discovered in e-waste bin what is probably the best boot drive that you will likely never buy. It is a DOM (disk on a module) and plugs in directly on to a motherboard USB2.0 header. It is also SLC (single level) and "industrial grade". Advertised speeds are basically the highest I've seen for any USB2.0 drive but with ATTO I was able to max 21read/16write (could be my motherboard limitation) but also very impressive small byte rates (everything was above 2MB/s). Before you click on the link, seems like new these are $100+ , if you can even find a place to buy one because they are not meant for direct sales to consumer. They also have MLC which obviously has lower endurance. https://www.innodisk.com/en/products/flash-storage/usb-and-usb-edc/usb_edc_vertical_2se It might be an overkill but if someone needs the best of the best, the SLC model is likely it (MTBF: 3 million hours). They also have USB-A thumb drive as well: https://www.innodisk.com/en/products/flash-storage/usb-and-usb-edc/usb_drive_2se#tab3 I hope you learned something today (no I am not Luis Rossmann in disguise, may be).
July 15, 20232 yr Well I took this is a challenge. I did buy and was just waiting on my flash drive to give me it's last boot. RIP Lexar M45 (9/21-7/23) 🪦 I bought the Innodisk 3ME (https://www.innodisk.com/en/products/flash-storage/usb-and-usb-edc/usb_drive_3me) digikey had it for "just" $51 for the "EX" which is the extreme temperature version. I figured when already paying 2-10x for a flash drive might as well spend that extra $8 to gain -40C and +15C (to 85C). I could've gone SLC, but on paper it looks like the main advantage is 3 more years of warranty. Innodisk warranties SLC to 5 years, MLC to 2. I know SLC is better, but in today's age of 3D QLC garbage MLC is pretty good and at half the cost of the SLC version I'll just pocket the difference and pony up for a new one if it makes it at least 5 years (my arbitrary cutoff to make this drive worth it). I've gone through 4 flash drives since I started using Unraid. Only 1 time was I caught without a flash backup.. never again.. I even had Unraid Servers plugin I just wasn't paying attention to it and it went out of sync at some point. But I must say I am tired of replacing drives every 1-2 years even with backups. I've tried everything to try to make the drives last longer - internal USB, rear, and front. I've tried all metal and plastic. Switched brands a number of times. No noticeable difference. I will be back here if this drive fails. 3,000,000 hours it should outlive me, but I know MTBF doesn't mean jack most of the time unless everyone here is equally unlucky. January 28, 20242 yr I just found this USB drive: 16GB Transcend JetFlash 180I https://us.transcend-info.com/embedded/product/embedded-flash-solutions/jetflash-180i Quote Transcend's industrial-grade USB flash drive JetFlash 180I comes with the 3D NAND flash and the SLC Mode, offering performance close to that of SLC NAND flash at a more affordable price. Its superior transfer speeds, longer lifespan, compact size, and high compatibility are suitable for mobile storage applications including healthcare, military, and industrial automation. The wide-temperature (-40°C ~ 85°C) capability ensures sustainable functionality in mission-critical applications. The JetFlash 180I can also be empowered by Transcend's UFD Security Toolbox software. Password can be set to secure the drive. Users can even get a One-time Password (OTP) through SMS message on the user's phone to unlock the drive, which ensures higher data security. Is that Flash drive a good option? It looks good on the paper... so we will see... Price ~15 EUR for 16GB is acceptable. Edited January 28, 20242 yr by bagican

March 23, 20251 yr @TOMillr @TOMillr-old yes, here are the results for the Apacer UH110-UFD1: 0,19 - 0,240 W in idle in USB 3 port, but in USB 2 port I measured a bit higher values (~0,3 - 0,4W) ⚡ in USB2 port: Quote But I think measuring power consumption of such devices are questionable. Power consumption is negligible. I would rather focus on efficiency of power supply or M.2 SSD disks in idle mode (for example Samsung 980 Pro or Samsung XYZ Pro are known they have good power management, even when ASPM disabled comparing to other SSDs: Quote Edited March 23, 20251 yr by bagican
