April 30, 201115 yr Am I missing someting? I was checking the firmware levels on all my drives and found a few Seagates that ought to be updated. (Example: ST32000542AS 2tb - CC34 to be upgraded to CC35 ) When I try to look up my Western Digital drives, I can't seem to find anything on the WD website about firmware. yes, they have a listing of the drives, and yes, if I look at the "download" section I see tools, etc... but nothing about firmware... http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?level1=6〈=en I'm hunting to see if I should upgrade these: Western Digital WD10EAVS-00D7B0 Western Digital WD10EAVS-00D7B1 Western Digital WD5000AAVS-00ZTB0 Western Digital WD5000AAJS-00YFA0 Western Digital WD5000AAKS-00TMA0
May 1, 201115 yr Author Why do you think there are firmware updates for WD drives? My WD MyBook's on other systems have had Firmware Updates. If the answer is as simple as "there are no firmware updates" then I have fine with that answer. I just find it quite 'puzzling' if not highly suspicions that there has been no firmware updates on my wide mix of WD drives. And checking other WD drive models, that I don't even own, on the page I linked to -- also showed no firmware updates. Very strange to me, that everything I was looking at said no WD drive firmware updates. That lead me to believe I wasn't looking in the right place, etc. I was simply going through a request from an earlier panic failure to double-check I was up to date on firmware -- have been systematically checking everything in my system -- MoBo BIOS, Disk Controllers, and now on to the drives.
May 1, 201115 yr It is not particularly common for drive manufacturers to update drive firmware. A few have in the past where there have been problems (notably Seagate and Samsung), but only for a very limited number of drives. The trouble with firmware updates from the manufacturer's point of view is that they create opportunities for customers to break things which often don't need fixing, so most drives don't have updates published even if later production units have later firmware installed (and that is often for reasons other than just making the drive work better).

The mybooks firmware updates the *controller* firmware, not the disk firmware You don't need to worry about updating the firmware. As the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Makes sense -- the MyBooks updated the controller, not the drive. I'll take the voice of the collective experiences here then. I'll stop looking for WD firmware Marking this thread [sOLVED]
