Also. if those are 'shucked' drives then you might be falling foul of the 3.3v power issue where a pin needs masking off.

It was that!
The drives were formatted at 520 bytes, I reformatted them to 512 bytes and after 17 hours they are working fine.
In case anyone needs the command is:
sg_format -v --format --size=512 /dev/sd(X)
