May 23, 20224 yr Machine: Dell PowerEdge r410 Virtualization: Enabled UEFI Boot Mode: Enabled SATA Mode: ATA I can't get my USB to boot Unraid in UEFI mode. i can get it to boot fine in normal mode. I re-made the USB in UEFI from my backup. When i first made my USB, I was getting the same problem, so i made the USB without UEFI. What am I doing wrong?
May 24, 20224 yr Community Expert I read that there are some specific issues with Dell servers, this post has some info and a fix
May 24, 20224 yr Author I tried that /bzimage initrd=bzroot intel_iommu=on iommu=pt It's not working. Same thing is happening.
May 29, 20224 yr Author I tried a different USB manufacturer thinking that Unraid didn't support it (like SanDisk) I made a new UEFI USB and it still had the same issue. This is frustrating.
May 29, 20224 yr Community Expert As I recall, UEFI was added to Unraid a few years (~ 5-6 Years) back because some MB's had that time longer had the capability to boot in the legacy BIOS mode. Now UEFI has a bit of a checkered past. Some of the early implementations of it were not well behaved. (I think it had to do with that they only worked with Microsoft Windows installs...) Your Dell PowerEdge r410 was introduced back in 2009 and could well have UEFI teething issues. Have you checked to see if there are updates to the BIOS? Have you google to see if other users have similiar problems getting Linux to boot on this server? You do realize there is nothing wrong with the BIOS boot mode. UEFI might be a bit more secure but the risk should be very low for any Unraid installation if you follow normal security provisions.
May 29, 20224 yr Author I need it to run ISOs apparently. If I don't have to use UEFI I'd be a happy camper. I'm at the max BIOS i can get. Edited May 29, 20224 yr by StreamingHawke

May 30, 20224 yr Community Expert You can run the VM itself on UEFI using OVMF, regardless of what the host (Unraid) is running
