June 6, 201115 yr Haven’t seen a thread about this so, is there a rule of thumb on how much free space should be left on a drive? How much do you have on your shares?
June 6, 201115 yr No, at first I had it set to 0, but probably not a bad idea to leave a few gigs free at least. So I currently have them all set to 5 GB (5000000)
June 6, 201115 yr i have seen several threads about free space can someone PLEASE put this to bed with a best practice guide for the different types of allocation methods
June 6, 201115 yr Free space is important for the fill-up allocation method. It must be at least as much as the largest file you would write to the server. Peter
June 6, 201115 yr It should always be set to at least the size if the largest file that you'll ever write.
June 6, 201115 yr i have seen several threads about free space can someone PLEASE put this to bed with a best practice guide for the different types of allocation methods Obviously it should be at least equal to the largest size file you plan on writing to the share. I have my free space set to twice the size of the largest file that I write to the share. I've seen several people recommend this strategy and it's worked just fine for me. For movies I estimate that the largest file that I'd write to the share is ~15GB (1080p mkvs) so I have the free space set at 30000000.
June 6, 201115 yr It should always be set to at least the size if the largest file that you'll ever write. i thought high water takes care of this automagically.... ?
June 6, 201115 yr so... then for high water there is no worry about free space ? Yes, it really doesn't matter much for the other allocation methods. For the High-Water, unRAID will jump from drive to drive attempting to keep the free space on all drives equal. By the time the free space setting becomes an issue you are running out of room. You might be able to manually move a few more files into the disks but that's about all. For the Most-Free, unRAID will pick the drive with the most free space to begin with. If it doesn't have enough space then there won't be another drive with enough free space. Peter
June 7, 201115 yr thank you very much for the full explanation.. i have looked here http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=UnRAID_Manual#Allocation_method and have not seen an explanation on reserve space.. so thanks once again
