[solved] Help! Cablevision and e-mail notifications

Featured Replies

Has anyone used the unmenu e-mail notifications with a Cablevision email server?

This is what I tried:

root@Tower1:~# echo -e "Subject: a test\n\nThis is the email body." | ssmtp -d root

[<-] 220 mta5.srv.hcvlny.cv.net -- Server ESMTP (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.2-8.04 (built Feb 28 2               007))

[->] EHLO localhost

[<-] 250 SIZE 104857600

[->] AUTH LOGIN

[<-] 533 5.7.1 AUTH command is not enabled.

ssmtp: Server didn't like our AUTH LOGIN (533 5.7.1 AUTH command is not enabled.)

This is my settings:

Forward "root" email to: [email protected]

E-Mail Server: smtp.mail.optonline.net

Use TLS? NO

Mail ID: me

Mail Password: password

Mail Domain: [email protected]

Override YES

Re-Write Domain:

RevAliases :

Try changing these:

E-Mail Server: smtp.mail.optonline.net:587

Use TLS: YES

Override: NO

If that works you can experiment with the override. Some servers do not allow rewriting the sender or they behave oddly when you try. You'll have to experiment or ask them.

Override was a problem, but still no go.

root@Tower1:~# echo -e "Subject: a test\n\nThis is the email body." | ssmtp -d root

ssmtp: Cannot open smtp.mail.optonline.net:25

Tried all combinations of:

Use TLS: YES

              NO

E-Mail Server: smtp.mail.optonline.net:587

                    smtp.mail.optonline.net

                    mail.optonline.net:587

                    mail.optonline.net

                    smtp.mail.optonline.net:25

and send to a different email account

Any ideas?

My best guess would be either:

Use TLS: YES and E-Mail Server: mail.optonline.net:587

or

Use TLS: NO and E-Mail Server: mail.optonline.net

Leave Override as NO until you get things working.

If no go then call/email them with the settings you tried and the error. These settings should be 2nd nature to their front-line support.

Thanks cyrnel

I will try that out when I get a chance. I'm preparing to install UnRAID Server version 5.0-beta7 and an iBM BR10i and will not be able to address this for some time to come.

Have a Great weekend

What a surprise! My email sever does not use a password.

Forward "root" email to: [email protected]

E-Mail Server:  mail.optonline.net

Use TLS?   NO

Mail ID:

Mail Password:

Mail Domain:   [email protected]

Override   NO

Re-Write Domain:

RevAliases :

HINT:  Do not forget to click on save and also on the reinstall buttons [ask me how I know LOL]

I may try some other settings latter but at least it is working now. Thanks for your help cyrnel.

There are other ways to authenticate, say, only allowing those already inside to use the server, but it's unusual. Goes against security-in-depth and such. But, that's someone else's plate. Glad you got it working!
