hey all

im super super new to unraid and i dont even know exactly why i made an unraid box, it was more of a case of "i think i can do this and it looks fun" than a necessity

i do have a lot of tv shows and movies that i want to figure out what cool stuff i can do with unraid but thats pretty much it - having fun learning what it can do

i literally just got it running now parity stuff took about 4 hours

my setup and prices...

keep in mind these are australian dollar prices and $1au=$0.70us

antec case with 12 drive bays (antec 1200 i think) second hand - $20

motherboard asus a520 m-k in computer shop bargain bin - $30

16gb DDR4 ECC second hand - $50

old silverstone PSU - free

ryzen 3600 left over from main pc upgrade - free

12X OLD 2TB drives i have collected over the years - free

1TB crucial mx500 for cache and stuff recently on special for - $106

4 port asm1064 pcie sata card - $28

5 port m.2>sata jmb585 card - $24

6in1 sata cables X2 $38 for both

about $300au dollars or $200us dollars for 22TB (1 parity)

i know ZERO about unraid, any tips for cool stuff i can do with my tv shows and movies (sorting them / sharing them throughout the house / whatever) would be helpful... where should i start looking at what to do?

Welcome!

In general I don't have anything against older/outdated hardware that is still fully capable of performing new tasks.

Except those two categories referenced above.

1. An old, lower quality PSU is a ticking time bomb.

It might decide to go with a boom (flash) - bad news to everything electrically connected to it.

2. Every HDD is a potential failure point.

You got a very vulnerable system with not much of useful space, considering the risk of a drive(s) failure.

I should have mentioned that this isn't my only copy of the files, I also have copies on my htpc and on external drives, I also mirror everything with my brother who lives nearby

Also as I said it's just a fun project to play with not a necessity If I lose a drive it will be a learning process of how to rebuild the array how long it takes etc etc - fun!

The Silverstone powersupply is still in fairly good condition, it's gold rated and I disassembled it and cleaned all the dust out of it - I think it's ok - I guess I could buy a brand new one eventually

Thanks for the feedback

OK, you're all good then.

I'd be genuinely interested in the amount of time your current system setup lasts without experiencing hardware related setbacks.

Please post if (when) you experience any hardware failures.

You must have enabled Docker and VM Manager in Settings before installing cache, because the cache:prefer shares appdata, domains, system are on the array.

Docker/VM performance will be impacted by slower array, and array disks can't spin down since these files are always open.

Nothing can move open files so you will have to disable Docker and VM Manager in Settings before running mover to get these moved.

Use CA Backup plugin to backup appdata to the array.
