Multiple drive failures

Featured Replies

I have a 14 drive array with 2 parity drives.

Drive #10 failed. Pretty sure due to a bad cable so I replaced it. cleared the drive and it was rebuilding.

Then Parity drive #1 failed.

This freaked me out so I got 2 new drives and replaced both.

Now drive #10 shows up as empty and is not rebuilding!

I shutdown the array.

I would like to hire an expert to help me out. Venmo or PayPal. We can do it over webex or something. I'm based in PST timezone.

Let me know if you can help or if this is not the right place to do that can someone point me to the right place to do that.

What do you mean by that?

Boot up, start the array, attach diagnostics to your NEXT post in this thread.

I did a pre-clear then added the drive back to the array.

No reason to preclear a disk for rebuild. Did rebuild complete?

How many parity do you have?

Unless you have dual parity there is no way to replace 2 disks at the same time.

yes, dual parity.

Disk10 is mounted, but has little if any data. No disks are disabled so nothing to rebuild.

You must have left out a lot of important details in your description. Can you tell us more?

Tell us more in detail about what exactly you did. Did you format any disk? Did you New Config? Did you reinstall? What exactly did you do to get to this point where there is no data on disk10 and no disks are disabled?

Doesn't look like any data on disks 12,14 either. Is that expected?

I did format #10 when it said it could not use it since it was in the wrong format.

Disk #12,14 are expected to be empty.

Screenshot is what is was right before replacing the 2 drives.

When I replaced the drives Drive #10 said it was not forted so I clicked on format.

You ignored the warning about formatting a disk in the array?

Format is a write operation. It writes an empty filesystem to the disk. Unraid treats that write operation exactly as it does any other, by updating parity. So after format, the only thing that can be rebuilt is an empty filesystem.

Were disks 12 and 14 also listed as not formatted?

Still doesn't explain why no disks are disabled or invalid though. Did you New Config or reinstall the flash drive?

That screenshot shows disk10 disabled, emulated disk10 was mounted and had 11+TB

Now that you have formatted it that data is gone.

Looks like parity and disk10 aren't assigned. Post a screenshot of Array Devices, and another screenshot of Unassigned Devices. Be sure to include the full width.

When I put in a new Disk #10 is said it was not usable because it was in the wrong format. I had assumed that in order to use it and have the system rebuild the data the new drive had to be formatted.

Sad.

Do you still have the original disk10? It probably still has your data.

I suspect neither disk was bad. Connection problems are much more common than bad disks, and extremely unlikely that multiple disks would fail at the same time unless there was smoke.

Please don't do anything else without further advice.

Sort of.

When drive #10 failed it seemed unlikely to be the drive and most likely the cable so I pre cleared the same drive and replaced the cable.

It was in the middle rebuilding when the parity drive failed.

Do you still have original parity?

Did you clear it? Was it removed before you formatted disk10?

There might be some chance to get it to rebuild disk10 from that original parity if nothing else has changed on your array.

I thought so.

Here is the current setup. I remove the new 16 tb drives

Yes

No it was not cleared. It was removed before the format of drive 10

I was hoping! but thought unlikely.

I was hoping to see everything with the array started, and whatever wasn't assigned in Unassigned Devices. What are those disks showing in Unassigned Devices?

But that's OK. Don't start the array now.  Has anything been written to your array since all this started?

Of course, parity2 was updated when you formatted disk10, so we would have to do the rebuild without parity2 and with the original parity. But it wouldn't work if any of your other data disks had been written after parity was removed.

The unassigned devices are the original drives.

No data has been written since then.
