First time install - boot stops after loading bzroot

Featured Replies

First time install

Gigabyte Vision D Z590

Intel i9 11900K

32GB Crucial RAM

4 WD RED drives

1 Samsung EVO 850 SSD

No other hardware attached - no video card

The first boot always hangs after loading bzroot - never got past that

Here's what I've tried to no avail

- 3 different USB sticks in each of the various USB ports on the motherboard

- Unraid USB creator, manual install, even the raspberry pi imager (works to install the image and make it bootable)

- EFI and legacy boot (changed the folder name back and forth)

- turned on and off - Secure Boot, Fast Boot

- tried both sticks of RAM one at a time

I see from searching this has been occurring for a few people for a while now and while some suggestions have worked for some people (I've tried those above), there doesn't seem to be one cause

Any suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated.

Thanks

Did you try the GUI mode boot option? For some reason sometimes it makes a difference.

Yes, no luck there either.  Tried all the options, including the 2 safe mode options.

Just now I reset the BIOS to defaults and tried again to boot - no luck

Have you been able to boot a Ubuntu live stick?

Thanks very much for that - that led me to the answer.

I tried to boot Ubuntu and had no luck - it would hand right after I selected "Install Ubuntu"

So I started researching my motherboard and Ubuntu installs.

And came upon this - https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2472509&page=3

Turns out neither Unraid nor Ubuntu will boot with Gigabytes latest BIOS for the Z590 Vision motherboard

I downgraded to the previous BIOS and sure enough Unraid is up and running.

Thank goodness for the search functionality. Just built last night a new machine for unraid (first time user here). As always before doing anything I updated the outdated BIOS.

Downgrading to the N-1 bios and will give it another go along with the new 6.11.3 release. Hopefully it boots up :)

Good news downgrade was not possible but after disabling thunderbolt boot in the BIOS unraid booted up :)

Looks like i have a similar issue with a new Shuttle SW580R8 motherboard, which i solved by downgrading the bios from 1.04 to 1.01.
