Advice on my Core i3 build with 16 drives

Hello,

After hours of reading I'm planning to build the following setup:

Case: Antec Twelve Hundred

Motherboard: Supermicro X9SCM-F

http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C202_C204/X9SCM-F.cfm

CPU: Intel i3-2100 Processor (3M Cache, 3.10 GHz)

PSU: Seasonic X-460 Fanless.

Do you guys think this is a good setup?

At first I will start with 6 hard disks. Later on this will be upgraded to a total of 16. Thats why I haven't included extra controller cards.

I want to use this as a server for streaming my 1080p mkv's to 2 mediacenter HTPC's. Also I will us it for backing up data from my family's other computers.

I am still not 100% sure of the cpu.

I don't want to go overkill but the server has to work smooth. It wil be idle most of the time.

I may use some add-ons: nzbget or something similar.

What do you guys advice: An I3 2100t , I3 2100 or a i3 2120? Or something else?

The server will be in our living room so I want it to be as quiet as possible.

Any suggestions are welcome. Also still not sure which power supply i need.

A little tip for the CPU:

The Intel i3 2100T is the energy efficient version, 35watt TDP versus 65watt for the 2100 without T.

and also the clock frequency is lower 2500,  instead of 3100mhz

When the server will idle for most of the time, i would install the T version

and when needed you have more than enough cpu power.

The T version gives you lower power consumption and less heat, so you can install lower rpm fans for cpu, case etc , more silence for the living room.

The i3-2100 is better available and a few  € / Dollar cheaper in most shops, but for the little difference i would choose the T version for your 16 drive build.

I see a lot of shop links/url to Afuture.nl !!! a new Dutch Unraid user maybe?  :D

I'm from Belgium but it is cheaper to buy in the Dutch webshop  ;)

Belgie, Oudenaarde hier,, heheheh ;D laten we het maar Engels houden he , kan de rest ook volgen!

for the case and stacker modules,, a nice cheap build to get room for 16 drives

but changing disks,, isn't so easy,,

This case can hold 4 times  5 in 3 Hotwap bays for a total build of 20 drives , but you pay a lot more for those hotswap bays then the cheap CM 4 in 3's.

advantage is the big fan for good cooling and you can run this low rpm

Don't think that it's only the Dutch and Belgians who can make sense of that!

True, best to keep it in English :) I'm from Oostkamp by the way.

The motherboard that I choose has 2x (x8) PCI-E 2.0 slots and 2x (x4) PCI-E 2.0 in slots.

Any advice on the PCI-E cards? I need a total of 10 extra sata. I prefer minimal sata II and if possible support for the new 3TB drives.

I don't want it to be too expensive.

Also I would like to use the Seasonic X-460 Fanless as psu.

http://www.seasonicusa.com/NEW_X-series_Fanless.htm

As I saw in the psu thread that the Seasonic X-400 Fanless can power 15 green drives I suppose the Seasonic X-460 Fanless can power 16 of them.

But will it be enough to power the extra pci-e cards?

...I am not sure if this combo will work.

For other server boards from SM, like the X8SIL, even an i3 CPU will require ECC memory.

You should check with SM support beforehand.

Edit: looks like it will NOT work: http://www.supermicro.com/support/faqs/faq.cfm?faq=11336

Best to pick from their approved RAM list. SM boards can be somewhat picky about that.

Thanks Ford Prefect and cyrnel for the advice.

I have changed the ram to Kingston 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 ECC CL9 DIMM  (KVR1333D3E9SK2/4G)

I really like the Seasonic x-400 /x-460 Fanless models,, they have 33A and 38A power on a single rail , so just perfect ; quiet en very efficient 80 plus gold.

I'm thinking to get one of these when my server build will exceed more than 10 drives.

In that supermicro board you chose you have the luxery of having 4 pci-e slots ,,

if you want a cheap way of filling those and get 8 sata ports extra , (including the 6 onboard gives you a cheap way of getting 14 sata ports)

then maybe you give these a try.

Or you try a mix of the common used and tested with unraid Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 and 1 extra 8 dollar Ebay card

So you have 6 + 8 + 2 = 16 sata ports

http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/AOC-SASLP-MV8.cfm

Or this newer model

AOC-SASLP-MV8 = SATA600

Thanks for all the advice.

The CPU will be the i3 2100 or 2120. I will not be using the 2100T as I found an article that shows that the 2100 or 2100t  have the same power consumption when they are idle.

But the gain in performance with the 2100 versus the 2100t is quite big. If it runs a bit smoother when it needs to I can live with a little more noise but I don't think there will be a noticeable difference most of the time.

As for the controller cards... I'll wait a bit longer until the 3gb (and higher) disks are more common. If I need an upgrade sooner I'll start with the cheaper cards that were suggested and use the onboard sata controllers for the bigger disks.

All I've read says you get the same low T power consumption by underclocking/volting the 2100, so probably a good choice. I'm waiting for the right combo to come along so I can try it myself.
