July 11, 201114 yr EDIT - added summary to my last post in this thread, see reply 19. Started last night and have 4 drives ready to pre-clear with all data copied off them. 1 for parity, 3 for data. USB device boots fine, 2 cycles of mem test ran no errors booted into unRAID successfully and show an IP address. 1st problem, I can not find http://tower. I get a page not found error, and it defaults to a search page with Comcast. I was able to access the webpage by typing the IP address of the server. I will probably code a static IP outside of the range of DHCP on my router so I could continue to access using this method, but why is it not working? I am using Google Chrome as a browser (if that matters). I will probably leave this topic open to throw up any other questions that come up. Thanks for the support

And is your router doing name resolution? If on a Mac check out the links in my sig (troubleshooting one should work) and you might have to add an entry to the hosts file on your Mac. Now before you do this you will need to set a static IP on the server.

If on a Mac check out the links in my sig (troubleshooting one should work) and you might have to add an entry to the hosts file on your Mac. Now before you do this you will need to set a static IP on the server. I am working from a Win7 machine. I don't have any settings in my router to turn off/on name resolution. It is a Cisco WRT54G2. However, I was always able to access my Win7 Server by name, using Windows Explorer (My Computer) and typing in //Computer Name/Path/ etc.... I have a hard coded IP address now and that does work.

July 11, 201114 yr Author I have 4 drives installed. They are noted as SDA, SDB, SDC, and HDA. HDA is a Hitachi 7200 RPM 2 TB SATA drive, only one installed right now (there will be 2 more). This will be assigned as the parity drive. In the drop down lists it shows pci-0000:00:14.1-ide-0:0 ide0 (hda) Hitachi_model_serial The other drives are listed as pci-000:00:11-0-scsi-1:0:0:0 host2 (sda) manf_model_serial. Why is the hitachi showing up as an IDE drive? It is clearly a SATA, nothing plugged into my IDE ports. Not sure if this matters, but SDA is plugged into SATA_1, SDB into SATA_2, SDC into SATA_3, but HDA is plugged into SATA_6. I left STA_4 and SATA_5 open for 2 more data drives I will be installing as soon as I copy my data over. All these drives are on my MB ports. I have one seperate SATA port that will be used for the cache drive, not yet installed.

Otherwise, it will run slower and not be able to take advantage of any of the newer SATA commands.

Otherwise, it will run slower and not be able to take advantage of any of the newer SATA commands. I just checked the BIOS. I see nothing about Legacy Mode for Hard drives, only for USB. The settings available for each hard drive are as follows: LBA/Large Mode: Auto Block (Multi Sector Transfer): Auto PI0 Mode: Auto DMA: Auto SMART: Auto 32 Bit Transfer: Enabled This is the same for all drives. The Hitachi uniquely has a setting for "Type" which is set to Auto. The other options are CD/DVD and ARMD. Not familiar with this setting but since the Hitachi is the only one showing up as an IDE, I figured it could be relevant. I was about to run preclear and noticed the Hitachi drive is NOT an Advanced Format drive. It still uses a 512K sector size. (model HDS7222020ALA330) This is totally unrelated to the it emulating IDE though correct?

(model HDS7222020ALA330) This is totally unrelated to the it emulating IDE though correct? It might be labeled differently in your BIOS but I can almost guarantee it is there to emulate an IDE drive. Look for something labeled ACHI mode. This has absolutely nothing to do with sector size, or Hitachi drives. It has to do with the fact that win-XP has no native SATA drivers, so the MB manufacturers had to make the board emulate an IDE drive so MS could boot on it.
July 11, 201114 yr On one of my boards it was labeled 'compatibility mode' (not mentioning IDE). It is there somewhere, and should be turned off. Bruce
July 11, 201114 yr Author OK, I found two settings. 1. SATA IDE Combined Mode - Set to Enabled 2. On Chip SATA Type - Set to Native IDE It took about 3 attempts, but the magic was in #1 being disabled and #2 being on AHCI
July 11, 201114 yr Author Still open is why I can't access via the sever name "Tower" It only using the IP address. This would be fine except using unMENU where it seems to grab the Server name from the configuration for the hyperlinks in the GUI, so even though I access unMENU using IP:8080, every time I click on a link it has to time out on the Tower name and then I have to change the address manually.
July 11, 201114 yr That stuff is so flaky. Reminds me of YP. On your windows box, enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. It's in the advanced protocol section, WINS resolution, for IP4.

I found the setting and turned it on. No change. It didn't give me any "reboot" messages, but I have 4 open telnet sessions preclearing drives. I can't restart tonight. Do you think it's something that requires restart, or should I be looking for other solutions? EDIT: I'm not sure if this has any bearing, but I tried to change the name of the Server, just a Simple 6 letter name and it wouldn't take. When I clicked "apply" it reverted back to "Tower"

I use Google Chrome too, and I initially had problems accessing the web ui when typing "http://tower" in the address bar. I ended up trying different variations and "tower/" (no "http://") ended up working. And "tower:8080" loads up unmenu. I hope that helps.

When I type in any variation, Chrome first tries to auto resolve to tower/, but then never works. I tried Internet explorer and nothing works there either.
July 12, 201114 yr Author Adding a new question here: I have had preclear running on night on 4 drives. Three of them: 1 - 7200 RPM Hitachi, 1 WD, and 2 - Samsung F4 drives. This morning. The WD20EARS is still on step 2 at 88% complete and has been running 14 hours. The other three drives are at step 10 and 12-17% complete over the same duration. The write speed for the WD20EARS has been a little slower but not nearly this much slower. It's around 78 MB/s and the others run 95-110. Why would it still be that far back. Do steps 3-9 run really fast? EDIT: OK Reading the description of steps 3-9, it looks like they would be quick. However, interesting how the WD is a few hours behind the other 3 that are all so close.
July 12, 201114 yr Author Here is the summary of where I stand with this issue currently: New install for version 4.7 I cannot access unRAID using the "Tower" name. I can access using static IP. I cannot change the name from "Tower" to anything else. When I hit "Apply" it resets to "Tower" I have turned on NetBIOS for IP4. I have tried this from both IExplorer and Chrome. I used to be able to access my Win7 Server by name on this network from this computer. Again, thanks for all the support everyone.
July 12, 201114 yr Author Inexplicably, it decided to let me change the server name. I didn't do anything different than last time and used the same name I previously tried, but this time it took. Then, using the new name, I can access via name instead of IP. However, when I change back to "Tower" still no luck. So my problem is sort of solved, but it's not really working correctly. Will unMENU update the hyperlinks next time I re-boot, or should I reinstall it?
July 13, 201114 yr Author Open Questions: 1. Why is there an issue with me accessing the server using the name "Tower"? This is now partially resolved because I was able to rename the server and access it with a different name, but the fact that it still won't work with the original name means something is not right. Unsolved problems have a way of re-surfacing so I'd like to figure out what was going on. 2. I have the following drives installed currently: SATA_0 - sda - assigned to disk 1 SATA_1 - sdb - assigned to disk 2 SATA_2 - sdc - assigned to disk 3 SATA_5 - sdd - assigned to parity disk. I am going to add 2 more data disks as soon as I get my data copied that will be plugged into SATA_3 and SATA_4. Will that cause the disk currently in SATA_5 to become sdf? Will I have to re-assign it as a parity drive and start over? If so, why would I not just turn parity off right now and copy without the parity drive to speed up the process since as soon as I'm done I will have to rebuild parity anyway? 3. When I got these drives plugged in I had the SATA ports out of order (everything didn't line up like it does now). When I got that problem figured out, the "sd" numbers changed for the drives and I had to reassign them. I thought the SATA port was not important to unRAID as long as the same physical drive is assigned to the same disk location, but if you have to re-assign it, don't you lose parity? 4. I started my first copy, about 75 GB. The speed started at around 40 MB/Sec and then quickly dropped to where it was hovering around 20 MB/Sec. Is this typical? I thought I should be able to maintain 40-50 MB/Sec with parity on? The initial parity sync of the blank drives was not fully complete over night but from the instructions it didn't seem like that was a problem. Is that possibly why it's slow? Currently it's about 62%, should I wait for it to complete before copying over everything else? 5. In the "Building an unRAID Server" instructions it mentions a "Security" page, that I don't see in my menu. I don't see anywhere I can set up additional users and passwords for access control. On the "Users" page I only have a place to add a password for "root." I do have a Pro license.

It makes no difference to unRAID. 3. When I got these drives plugged in I had the SATA ports out of order (everything didn't line up like it does now). It may line up like you want it to now, but those sdX assignments can change, and likely will between boots. 4. I started my first copy, about 75 GB. If my router wasn't doing name resolution, then it shouldn't pick up my new name either, right? I also used to get my old Win 7 server by name no problem. do not worry about the SATA port and relation to the sdX names and the disk# assignment within unRAID. Will I have to re-assign the drives when the sdx number changes? If I have to re-assign the parity drive will that null my parity sync (or does that happen anyway when you add a drive)? That is a little slow, even with parity, but it is not to bad. It depends on a lot of factors (network, drives in use, etc). The drives are all less than a year old and pre-cleared with speeds from 80-115 MB/Sec. I used to copy onto my Win 7 server with speeds from 60-90 MB/Sec on this network. Is there any place to look to increase this performance? I'd be happy in the 40-50 ish range. I will use a cache drive once everything is set up, but copying over 4.5 TB, it doesn't make sense. If it comes up after completing the initial parity sync I'll post it here, says about 3 hours left. I have some media jukebox database folders with a really high number of small files. It really didn't like that, speeds dropped down to a few MB/sec, but a pretty big slow down could have been expected. All told it's something like 36K files for a few GB of space. Not near my server right now but there should be a place to enable User level security If you could (or anyone else) post this when you can, that would be great. I'm not seeing it anywhere. THANKS
