July 14, 201114 yr Could someone explain me the difference between the two? After all, a normal SATA cable has no front or back. You can plug it in any way you want. Why would a SF8087 -> SATA cable be any different than a SATA -> SF8087 cable? Both look to me the same... Do the electrical signals care if they go to the SF8087 connector, or from the SF8087 connector? Thanks.

While I understand WHAT the forward and reverse are used for, is there an easy way (visually) to tell the difference between the 2 cables (or are they in fact the same cable)?

No. While I understand WHAT the forward and reverse are used for, is there an easy way (visually) to tell the difference between the 2 cables (or are they in fact the same cable)? The connectors will be the same, the cable will be the same, but the wire arrangement - which wire goes to which connector pin - will be different.

While I understand the differences in USAGE of forward vs. reverse cables, I'm having a really hard time trying to visually SEE the differences when I look at all my various cables. Unless the cable is still sitting in it's packaging, I have no way of telling if they are forward or reverse. Any labels on the cables seem to be meaningless (and quite varied from supplier to supplier). I guess a multimeter on the pins would reveal the truth, but the connectors are very small and getting the meter probe onto each pin is very difficult.
