Parity drive in raid 5

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,
I'm thinking of mounting an external hard drive in Raid 5 (3 drives + 1 backup) as a parity drive. Is it a good idea or due to data traffic and power consumption... isn't it worth it?

No.

Parity drive does not contain real data. Even if lost, all files are still in place and accessible.

But Parity drive must be the largest one and should be the fastest (at least very fast) one too because it is used on every write operation of the array.

You did not specify, but "external" usually also means "slow", so its a bad idea.

Also power consumption of 4 small drives + controller + case is surely much higher compared to one huge internal drive.
