My First unRaid Experience

Just thought I would post my experience with unRaid and it's amazing ability. I have always been attached to NAS (no pun intended), but when a friend told me about unRaid and how easy it is to setup I knew I had to try it out for myself. I didn't want to have to build my own Storage Server as I really did not have the time, but I also did not want to spend my life's savings on an overly priced system. I stumbled upon a website that has a relatively cheap price for all that I got. I now have a 40 TB Storage solution that I paid just over $6,000 for (after taxes of course). The people had already configured unRaid on it (which was also handy to have done) and I am downloading and backing up movies and shows like a mad man. The site I used was: www.fourfellows.com

I also looked at other solutions, but did not want to pony up over $10,000 for a mere 12 TB. I highly recommend that site to get your dream Server because the experience was amazing. I had a bit of an issue with how to use it fully but all I had to do was send an email and I received a detailed reply within minutes of how to setup my computer and house to communicate with the Server.

Bottom line is that unRaid is amazing and running amazingly on my new Norco Server. I highly suggest checking out the FourFellows site for anyone else needs for Storage along with unRaid (as I would have never done this configuration without unRaid).

Just felt I should share this as I see a lot of posts about people wanting cheap Solutions to massive Storage.

Sounds good and glad you are happy.

That site doesn't look very cheap though. There are a few companies selling server hardware for use with unRAID and they have pinned posts at the top of the buy/sell forum.

I believe one of them could do a 20 x 2T drive populated rack mount server for about $3500, compared to the $5880 that FourFellows is advertising. You could even do cheaper saving about $25-$30 per drive = $500 by sourcing a server from one of them and buying the drives from a place like Newegg. The FourFellows server itself appears to cost an easy 2X what it should.

I did not want to be the first to be the first to say anything as I help run one of those companies.  A fully populated with hard drives 4220 from GreenLeaf would run about $3,200 before shipping.

lionelhutz is correct in that you could save a little more money by purchasing the drives yourself.  We (GreenLeaf) run all our drives through preclear 3 times to make sure that no bad drives are shipped with the server.

All good suggestions, and remember there will always be something cheaper. I was merely posting about my experience and how great unRaid is for me. FourFellows is something I stumbled upon and just wanted to share with the community. I also just couldn't believe the support I received from FourFellows, they were very kind and very quick to reply.

I just figured I would share, thanks for the information on the other companies though, they are worth checking out too.

I am a part of FourFellows (web guy mainly).

We are more geared to companies than individuals, hence the higher prices.

The guys are apparently looking at creating a package more suited for individuals, since it seems to be a popular thing among hobbyists.

I guess that is why I received the support I needed very quickly  ;). Thank you Tophicles! (not sure if it was you who helped me out or if it was someone else).

If you are happy then that's all that counts.

I was pointing out the other companies so that others reading this thread know there are options. The FourFellows server may well come with extra business level support/warranty and they likely are still cheaper than many/most other commercial grade storage solutions.
