HDD SMART Reports errors

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've just bought a brand new 10TB HDD for my array and it's just started reporting errors. The three it's reporting are:

  1. Reallocated Sector Count (10 Raw Value)
  2. Temperature Celsius (45 - not too concerned about this one).
  3. Current Pending Sector (8 Raw Value)

I've contacted Amazon and they've helpfully stated I can return the drive for a refund, but failed to consider what happens to the data that's already on the drive. They wont send a replacement out first, so I'm in the process of being a pain in the backside.

That aside, what is the likelihood of the errors being a false-positive? I've read a number of different responses to this saying it could be and that the only way of really checking is to restart the array and run an extended SMART check. Is this true? Others have said that I need to run a few Parity checks back-to-back and if no errors are found, then it's likely fine also.

I'm currently running a parity check (0 issues found so far). Should I stop that to sort this disk? Will it ruin the parity if it does it whilst one of the disks has an error?

Run an extended smart report.

That's a common practice, so I'm not surprised.

Since you're running parity, you can remove the offending drive, install a replacement and allow it to rebuild parity. You'll be fine as long as you don't lose another drive.

Issue is that I don't have another drive to replace it with, sadly. Which is my issue.

Got the report finally. Completed without error. The 'Current Pending Sector' error also cleared.

Thoughts? (Struggling to upload the file)

Disk is OK for now, but if you can get it replaced with a new one (not a refurbished one) I would.

I understand that and have been in that situation before. I once went over 2 weeks with my missing drive in emulation mode. Never again. I always buy a spare. In fact, when I buy a drive, I'm replacing my spare. The drive that was my spare will be going into my server.

I also put every drive I buy through a full stress test. I use the preclear plugin (3 full passes) if I can connect it to my server or one of the other drive burn-in scripts I've found if I have to do it some other way.

Out of interest, does this disk look refurbished to you? Because it wasn't supposed to be.

I just had to do a power down and on power up, it's now showing 88 for current pending sector. Ordered 2 new HDDs. It's a good opportunity for me to look at larger ones as the 10TB are always the most difficult to get. I'm also going to try Seagate.

No, I was talking about the replacement, if you do an RMA with WD you will likely get a refurbished one.

Ah got you. It's still in Amazon returns. I just need to get the new disk in and sorted ASAP.
