Is it possible that there is a symlink or something that points to all of those other files on some other drive, and SMB is not following it? No, the disk share shows the exact same files as the user share. There is also no symlink that I am aware of.
January 11, 20242 yr Community Expert Does the disk share show the same files that the user share shows when you access both with SMB? Does the disk share show the same files that the user share shows when you access both with NFS?
January 11, 20242 yr Author Disk Share for disk2 (MP3s folder) over SMB = 59 files Disk Share for disk2 (MP3s folder) over NFS = 6375 files User Share for Music (MP3s folder) over SMB = 59 files User Share for Music (MP3s folder) over NFS = 6375 files Edited January 11, 20242 yr by wishie fixed typo
January 11, 20242 yr Community Expert @wishie, I think the implied question was "In all of the various displays over SMB have the exact same 59 files in them?" I don't know quite how you could check all of the 6375 files that NFS has but you could probably verify that random selected sample of files are present in both the User Share and the Disk Share, and make sure that the 59 Files that show up under SMB are included in the NFS list.
January 11, 20242 yr Author Yes, the 59 files over SMB, in that MP3s folder, are exactly the same. And yes, all 59 files seen on the SMB share are also visible on the NFS share of the same folder.
January 11, 20242 yr Community Expert I also requested that you do this: On 1/10/2024 at 7:25 AM, Frank1940 said: @wishie, consider copying off all the files onto a Flash drive or a external HD (probably faster) using NFS and see if you have any problems with either the copy operation or file listing after that. If you find nothing there then make a new share--- or a new directory in Music (like, BackMP3) ---and copy them back using SMB. I would recommend installing the Unassigned Devices plugin and format the external media to be a format that can be read by either your Windows PC or your MAC. Plug it into the appropriate client and copy it back to Unraid using SMB. The purpose of this exercise is see if it will find some files with naming issues. If either copy fails on a file. Figure out a way to avoid trying copying it. Edited January 11, 20242 yr by Frank1940 Posted prematuerly
January 11, 20242 yr Author I will have to get an external drive big enough and give that a go.. maybe this afternoon.
January 12, 20242 yr Author Ive managed to figure it out, and it is indeed special chars in filenames that was causing the issues. Freestyle\ -\ gon\ som\ Glittrarn\ 98.mp3 Me\'Shell\ NdegOcello\ -\ * La\ Cream\ -\ Chateu\ d\'Amour.mp3 and a few others.. but about 9 files in total caused the issue
January 12, 20242 yr Community Expert For future referance for anyone else who might have this problem, how did you fix the problem? Please describe in enough detail to allow that person to do it the same way as you did. (Example: Don't say "changed file name". Rather say, used Linux command, XX, from the command line using the Unraid's GUI terminal.) EDIT: And mark your answer as the Solution. Edited January 12, 20242 yr by Frank1940
January 12, 20242 yr Community Expert When I had a similar problem with invalid characters, the files/folders would show up in Windows File Explorer, but the filename column would be blank, only other columns such as date and size would be displayed next to the blank filename. I could see the files in MC and the invalid characters were obvious there.
July 12, 20241 yr I know this is quite old, but I had the exact same issue and it was bugging the heck out of me. This thread did help me to identify I had one file out of a thousand that had some invalid characters in it causing half of my files to not be visible within windows smb. I wasn't able to just re-name the file from the unraid file manager -- I had to launch into terminal and go to Midnight Commander to rename the afflicted file. Once I renamed it, everything became visible in smb. Sorry if this was already noted somewhere, but I searched for quite a while for a solution and didn't find anything outlining the exact steps someone took. Again, this can't be done in windows smb or the unraid gui file manager. Solution: From unraid gui launch into terminal session from the top right of the window In terminal type: mc Once mc is running, find the afflicted file/s. /... /mnt /disk# /YourShareFolder One by one select the afflicted file and press Shift+F6 to re-name Change the name under the "to:" field and press O or click OK When you're done renaming all the afflicted files, press 10 or click on Quit. Reload your smb folder window and you should see all files.
July 13, 20241 yr How did you find which files had an invalid character? I think I'm running into this same issue but it's not apparent which files are the culprits.

(If you have files with language-specific characters, they can cause problems in some cases. But check for the standard ones before go looking for these.)
