[SOLVED] Make server without sleep or suspend function go to sleep.

Featured Replies

Using Dell PowerEdge SC1420. Everything is working for me except the sleep function. I don't have S2 or S3 option on the mobo and sleep script is not working. Any ideas?

If the system doesn't support it then I don't think you will be able to make it sleep.

The power button... though that is a little more than just "sleep"

I don't believe so.

1. Are there any unmenu or unraid scripts that support sleep function?

2. If there is no s2 or s3 support, will the sleep script work?

Thank you all... please let me know if you think/ find any solution for this situation..

I have Dell Poweredge sc1420.. No s2 or s3 support.

I don't need to have machine running 24/7, So was thinking if the machine as sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity and wake up with WOL.

You might be able to switch it off and use WOL to switch it back on, but you will need BIOS support for WOL.

I'm not sure about automatically switching it off after a period of inactivity, probably not practical.

server hardware is built on the premise that you don't want to power it off, let alone sleep it.

Things like sleep, suspend, hibernate would all possibly corrupt hardware raid arrays, databases, mail servers etc... remove the temptation and people wont do it.

turning them off can suck too, many severs can take several minutes just to post..

I bet you find that when it goes idol, it does not use as much power as you think.

I am using this surge strip for my entertainment center. Question before I think of doing this: Is it safe to turn off/on unraid machine (array wise)?

Turning the server off with the surge protector is absolutely unsafe.  If you do this, the server will automatically run a parity check the next time it is booted, and it isn't unusual to see a few parity sync errors as well.  I definitely do not recommend turning off the server with the surge protector.  To turn it off, use the buttons on the unRAID web GUI, or use the server's power button (press it once, do not press and hold).

Turning the server on from the surge protector is perfectly safe.  The BIOS feature is what will actually turn the server on, unRAID will not know that you didn't just turn it on normally (by pressing the power button).

The powerdown script worked great for me.  It's not automatic (I don't think), but it's better than the power strip idea.  I would absolutely NOT turn it off with the power strip.
