Help: I can not boot anymore using either 4.2.3 or 4.2.4

Featured Replies

Whatever I do I end up on a:

Unpacking initramfs...<0>Kernel panic - not syncing: no cpio magic

Last time that happen I redownloaded the files and retransfered bzroot and bzimage, but I now did it several time, using OS X and Windows, and it doesn't work, is my usb key dead ?

I'm running a Mem test at the moment, but everything seems fine on that side.

The Mem test was ok, I disconnected the network cable got a kernel panic with a different message.

I know compare md5 of bzroot, and they differ on my computer and on my flash drive, is my flash drive just losing it?

(and I don't have the 4.2.1 files anymore)

As a test, I downloaded the zipped image from our download site and prepared a Flash using it - no problem.

Probably your Flash is having problems.  You can try copying the bzroot file off the Flash back to your PC and doing a 'diff' to see if it's corrupted.

I did and they differ.

What can I do?

Just set up a new unraid box, 1st one.  Things look really good.

I am getting the same error(kind of) when I try to boot, however.  I too have tried 4.2.4 and 4.3.2.

My memtest comes back fine.  It's frustrating.

I get Unpacking initramfs....<0> Kernel Panic - not syncing: invalid format (err=2)

Going to try a different thumbdrive.  Any suggestions?

Best choice is to try a different Flash drive.  Second option is to go into your motherboard bios and change slower USB speed - some bios call this "USB1.0", others call it "full speed" (as opposed to "hi-speed").

Darn, I don't have an option like that in my BIOS (phoenix award) Asus M@A-VM motherboard.

I tried a Kingston 2gb stick and a memorex 512MB stick, same error.  It stinks that I have all this hardware and get out done by a thumbdrive

After doing some more searching on this forum regarding boot issues, I found the answer!

doing a syslinux -ma made both of my thumbdrives work!

I think I have a serious problem with the flash drive, I did several mount/unmount each time followed by a md5 on bzroot, and each time I get a different one, not a good sign… :-[

I think I have to consider reinvesting in flash memory!

[EDIT] that was on OS X (on a mac mini intel, a macbook and a powermac g5), I did some test in Windows and I get proper md5 ??

On my unRAID server I get constant kernel panic on initramfs, I will try to get a new usb key ASAP.

I already backed up my config folder, Should I try to reformat the key and put it back together to see if it helps

Sure.  Maybe it's a file system corruption issue, instead of physically bad Flash - though one would then wonder how the file system got corrupted...

Well, I tried a reformat, OS X succeed but cannot mount it after, windows thinks it's locked... :'(

I revived my USB key, it booted, who knows how long it will hold.

Now that I'm feeling a bit less under stress, a short request :

Tom would you consider a "special plan" for current owner like me ? Something like 30$ (99-69) for an upgrade from the single key to the key 2-pack (so only 1 more licence) or something like 69$ for a new key 2-pack.

I felt really stupid not to have taken to key 2-pack at the first place, but my budget is not always expandable. (like these days)
