Made a possibly big mistake. Now can't start array...help!

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

My misfortune started a week ago when I piurchased a new drive for unraid. I used a no name pci sata card to add it, and initially I was able to add it to the array. Shortly after, i noticed that it was throwing errors. I never assigned any shares to it, as I was waiting to make sure the drive worked before starting to load data onto it.

People suggested I get an LCI card instead, as those pci sata cards don't work well.

So since I was going to remove the drive while I waited for the LCI card to show up, I stopped the array, and removed the drive from the array, and then proceeded to clear it (on the same page of unraid).

I then realized that I can't start my array again with the other drives, as it's saying that disk is missing and array cant start because of it.

So now I'm stuck and don't know what to do, as I would like to not lose any data on the other drives that are untouched.

What should I do?

Thanks for your help

Could do New Config and assign the original drives.  This will want the parity to build after.

Possibly other options that I can't think of.

Hi Veah, what do you mean it will want the parity to build? I don't use a parity drive.

  • Community Expert

Oh.  I assumed you had a generic build that uses 1 or 2 drives for parity.  If you don't use it, then it would not apply.

BTW, if any of the big brains pass through, they will likely ask you to post diagnostics.  They are able to clean a ton from that.

ok, understood. It would seem my only option is to do the New Config and start the array with the 'missing' drive. I just don't know if this will cause me to lose everything or not?

I have downloaded the diagnostics folder so can post whatever is needed to help figure out this mess

I think you meant to make new without the missing drive.  You can add it later on when you have the part you mentioned waiting for.  The idea is to put you back where you started before adding that last drive.

I do not recall the options exactly, but be sure to read the checkbox choices.  You want to keep all your array and cache drive data intact.

Ok, so if I'm reading this correct, I just need to do a New Config in Tools, and preserve all settings (array & pool slots), this should put me back where I was pre stopping the array?

Check Preserve Pool Slots.

The array slots you need to assign manually (don't check) Basically use your image and assign all but disk 5 so it is left unassigned.

Aha ok I think I understand.

And I shouldn't lose any data right? Since it's a disk that wasn't being used anyways?

  • Community Expert

Data will stay there on disks 1-4.  Disk 5 is is just being removed so that unraid is not looking for it anymore.

Thank you, everything came back up perfectly as you suggested.

On a side note, is there an LCI card or Marvell card you recommend for my case use? There's so many different models, all around the same price I don't know what to pick...

Which SATA card no name did you buy from? I just purchased one off Amazon and wanting to make sure i didn't fall for the same brand.

I purchased a 6 slot BEYIMEI that uses the ASM1166.

MHQJRH PCI Express SATA 3.0 Controller Card

Not asm anything as far as I can tell. So you should be ok. Let me know if you get it up and running ok, as it seems everyone is all about the LSI cards over the ASM cards.

Good to know, thanks! I've got the new drive pre-clearing right now so far so good at the least. The main pinned thread points to ASM, good to know about the LCI cards though for the future.

I use an Adaptec ASR 71605 and it's great.  But used on eHay or whatever it's called.  If you go that route, you NEED to be sure it's cool.  A 40mm fan screwed to the heatsink plugged into mb header is how I do it.  If it gets hot, it lets you know.

Do you think the ASM1166 needs a fan to cool as well?

  • Community Expert

I do not see anything in documentation about ASM1166 airflow requirements, I am guessing it will be ok in any reasonably vented case.

The one I mentioned is intended to be used in a proper server chassis with front to rear airflow of the loud persuasion.  Since I am in a Fractal (normal tower style) case, I needed to supplement the airflow by mounting a fan on it.

Roger that, makes sense! I am also in a normal tower as well. I noticed my HDD that i am pre-clearing was getting toasty so airflow was already on my mind i need to address for my server haha.
