joelones Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Hi All, I am in need of some desperate help. This is a new build with only one disk and I am getting errors in the syslog Drive: ST2000DL003 Case: NORCO RPC-4020 MB: supermicro x8sil-f The drive is connected to a sata port on the motherboard: Syslog: Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: ata4: hard resetting link Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: ata4: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 310) Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: ata4.00: configured for UDMA/33 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Result: hostbyte=0x00 driverbyte=0x08 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Sense Key : 0xb [current] [descriptor] Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: Descriptor sense data with sense descriptors (in hex): Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: 72 0b 47 00 00 00 00 0c 00 0a 80 00 00 00 00 00 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: 20 32 c6 67 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] ASC=0x47 ASCQ=0x0 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] CDB: cdb[0]=0x2a: 2a 00 20 32 c6 48 00 04 00 00 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 540198472 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: __ratelimit: 246 callbacks suppressed Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 67524809 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on sdb Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 67524810 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on sdb Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 67524811 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on sdb Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 67524812 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on sdb Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 67524813 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on sdb Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 67524814 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on sdb Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 67524815 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on sdb Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 67524816 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on sdb Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 67524817 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on sdb Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 67524818 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on sdb Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: ata4: EH complete Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: ata4.00: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x400100 action 0x6 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: ata4.00: BMDMA stat 0x26 Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: ata4: SError: { UnrecovData Handshk } Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: ata4.00: failed command: WRITE DMA EXT Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: ata4.00: cmd 35/00:00:48:ca:32/00:04:20:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 524288 out Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: res 51/84:b1:97:ca:32/84:03:20:00:00/e0 Emask 0x30 (host bus error) Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: ata4.00: status: { DRDY ERR } Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: ata4.00: error: { ICRC ABRT } Dec 20 20:59:34 tonyunraid kernel: ata4: hard resetting link This errors keep on repeating. The syslog is 30MBs! The drive is 6.0Gbs but the board is 3.0Gbs, I doubt that could be the problem. Could it be the backplane in the Norco? It appears that the preclear has froze. Please help. Thanks
prostuff1 Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 try not going through the backplane for now and see what happens. If it works correctly then put it back in the norco and ake sure to fully seat the drive in the bay (push on it slightly after you have locked the drive in place).
joelones Posted December 20, 2011 Author Posted December 20, 2011 thanks for the reply prostuff1, i really appreciate it i will try without the backplane and make sure it's seated correctly when i get home. i did use the -A switch for advanced format, however, i did not check the jumper settings - just popped the drive in the norco, hope that's not it. i am however, currently preclearing a 1.5 seagate (ST1500DL003) in the same port (it's a 6Gbs too), hopefully, there's nothing wrong with the backplane and i could hopefully rule that out. it did correctly detect this drive @3.0Gbps: Dec 20 21:22:08 tonyunraid kernel: ata4: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) Dec 20 21:22:08 tonyunraid kernel: ata4.00: ATA-8: ST1500DL003-9VT16L, CC3C, max UDMA/133 Dec 20 21:22:08 tonyunraid kernel: ata4.00: 2930277168 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)
