molesza Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 I am accessing unmenu over WAN and have just realised that it is not password protected like the main unraid gui. Is there a way to do this?

Joe L. Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 HUGE mistake opening up server to WAN without VPN.
molesza Posted December 21, 2011 Author Posted December 21, 2011 Thanks guys. I have disabled access to unmenu remotely.
johnm160 Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 unmenu is not open to wan by default is it? I never though about that when I installed it. I remember reading that unmenu now has ftp built in, also that is not open to wan is it?
Joe L. Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 unmenu is not open to wan by default is it? No. It is available to anyone on your LAN if it is running, but there is no way to access it from the WAN unless you open ports through your router to get to it. I remember reading that unmenu now has ftp built in, also that is not open to wan is it? unMENU can bse used to install an alternate version of "ftp" in place of the one that is already installed by default in unRAID in its basic distribution. Both need to be configured, there are no "GUI" screens, nor web-pages. Config of either is on their native command config files. (not for novices) Opening up unRAID to the outside world is just about like letting your teen-age kids play with matches and dynamite. Sooner or later, somebody or something will get hurt. Joe L.

Can you point me to a good solution for VPN access, I would like to be able to access things from the road. With all of the server setup and IT stuff I have done (with windows, i am a linux idiot) I have never actually set up a VPN

This works great and gives me full access to my network as if I was sitting at home on my local wireless network.

Some of the Buffalo routers come with a version of DD-WRT pre-installed with several VPN options.
joeman2116 Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 You can also use Hamachi VPN - its a free vpn which works with UNRAID, and Windows etc Very easy to setup on UNRAID - using the plugin and also on Windows with the Windows client Joe
johnm160 Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 Thanks for the guidance. Currently my router is part of my Uverse gateway so I can't change the firmware on that. I have a linksys E2000 that I am not sure if it plays well with ddwrt. I have a netgear that I know does not play well (bricked) so I may look inot hamachi for now. VPN in the router would be nice but with the holidays and just dropping close to a thousand buck to replace my daughters Ram (yes the farm animal) my disposable income is at an all time low
dgaschk Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 A Buffalo is a lot cheaper than a ram: http://www.buy.com/sr/searchresults.aspx?qu=buffalo+router&qxt=home&display=col
Queball Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 I have used the Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH for about 8 months and haven't had a single hiccup.

I am liking the look of that hi power WZR-HP but of course that one is not the VPN router...figures. LOL
molesza Posted December 22, 2011 Author Posted December 22, 2011 So would it not be a good idea to have access to standard unraid gui that is password protected with 15 character password? If not, why?
Joe L. Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 So would it not be a good idea to have access to standard unraid gui that is password protected with 15 character password? If not, why? If you can be 1000% certain that emhttp is not vulnerable to a buffer overflow attack, AND if it used https vs. http so that the password would be encrypted as it was sent, then sure. But since the first can not be assured, and it is guaranteed certain you are currently sending the password un-encrypted, you are placing yourself at risk. Joe L.
molesza Posted December 22, 2011 Author Posted December 22, 2011 I see. Thanks for replying. I love being able to access my machine remotely and have looked into hamachi but I need a vpn service that I can connect to with my android devices. Is there any service that I can run on the unraid server as a host VPN that I can connect to with windows vpn and android devices?
dgaschk Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 You can install ssh using unmenu. But you'll have to make sure that all logins are locked down. It's much safer to use a VPN.
