"Don't write to the array during parity rebuilds unless you want to risk losing data"

Featured Replies

I saw something on the unraid subreddit but wanted to get people's opinion here as the most upvoted comments on Reddit are often completely wrong information posted by people who don't know what they're talking about.

seems to indicate that in a dual parity setup you shouldn't use the array while it's being rebuilt, otherwise you risk losing data. That's wrong, isn't it? I thought the whole point of parity is that the array can remain up during the 24-36h it takes to rebuild a failed disk.

Yes.

The only reason for not writing to the array during a parity operation is that both the write and parity activity badly affect each others performance while they are running in parallel.   No adverse effect on data integrity.
