Worth having 1 parity drive for 2 bay setup?

Recommended Posts

I have 2 bay NAS where I installed unraid beta and works well so far, I have 2 x 10tb drives availabel + 1TB nvme for cache.

I wonder is for such setup woth having 1 parity or just skip it and go for a big 20tb  pool.

In your case you could also consider a Mirrored-RAID1 ZFS. Makes no Difference if Parity or Mirror (in respect of data protection). ZFS might be a bit more fancy and faster, Parity would allow easier updates to larger drives in the future.

Your "striped" consideration of course offers the biggest storage, but without any protection (even worse, if one drives failes somedays, data on both becomes inaccessible and is lost)
