sevrer won't boot (probably related to lsi hba)

Featured Replies

Hello,

This morning i wanted to start my backup server.

As i did not seen it on the network i plug a monitor and a keyboard.

First image is when i do nothing.

The second is when i hit keyboard at startup.

If you have an idea of what is wrong....

edit:

it boots when i unplug lsi hba (9207-8e). I modified some bios settings and it wasn't booting at all.

After a clear cmos it booted but as soon as i plug the hba i have the weird display.

Do you think the hba is dead ?

It is the same hba since the setup of the server 5 years ago. It has 20.000.07 it firmware if i remember correctly and has not been reflashed since.

Is there another port on MB to try hba in?

There is where I would start.

Now, I am basing that on the presumption (1) that the server has been working previously and (2) you did not make any change to hardware and/or settings and/or software in the interval between the last time it booted up properly and the first time it did not boot up.

The only other thing to consider is that the CMOS battery could have reach its end-of-life...

Without the hba the server boots normally.

I tried another pcie port for the hba  but no luck. I repasted the hba chip as the pad was completly dried but it still doesn't boot.

There has been no hardware or software changes.

What a dead cmos battery would do ?

Is there a way to reflash the hba ?

I will probably buy another hba. Any recommendations for a hba which doesn't heat too much ?

I have a 9300-8e in my main server and it heats up quite a lot.

It supplies power to the cmos (memory) that stores the settings for the BIOS configuration (plus, for the operation of the system clock).  The battery usually lasts

at least five years.  They are usually cheap, easy to replace and can be found at any place that sells batteries for devices like hearing aids.

They all use power and that will heat things up.  The more ports, the faster the transfer speed will also increase the power.  To decrease the temperature, increase the air flow over the board.  By the way, LSI/Broadcom designed their cards knowing that they their chip sets require cooling.  There is why there is that big heat sink on them.  They were designed for use in servers where noise from fans was not a big consideration!

Another factor.  LSI/Broadcom has discontinued the 9200 and 9300 series of cards over five years ago.  So if you are buying an LSI card from those lines that is being sold as 'New', you are getting a counterfeit board.  I am not saying that these boards might not be satisfactory BUT the fact the manufacturer(s) is(are) not willing to identify themselves is not a 'vote of confidence' about their overall quality!   They all use LSI/Broadcom chip sets but everything else--- heatsink, resistors, capacitors, connectors  circuit board ---is source elsewhere!  So vet the seller of such cards very, very carefully.  (And one more thing, they also forge the labels that they attach to the board.)

The asr 71605 works great with unraid.  You NEED to add a small 40mm fan to the heatsink or ensure (I think it is) 200 cfm airflow through a server type chassis.  Refreshing the paste or pads is a good idea too.

do you think dell tg93gd would suit in my hp z620 ?

It's the only one i found with bigger heatsink.

  • Community Expert

Probably.  I didn't find the airflow requirement or how well the z620 breathes, but it looks like you could put a small fan on it if needed.

Unfortunately, i don't have room for that all the pcie slots are occupied.
