February 15, 201214 yr Does anyone know of any power-over-ethernet powered switches? I'd like to add a single port at a destination that has CAT6e run to it, and it would be neat if it could be powered without an external power supply. I don't think such a switch exists though.
February 15, 201214 yr something like this? http://www.provantage.com/hewlett-packard-hp-jd057a~73CO9191.htm
February 15, 201214 yr There's a good selection of PoE switches in that price range at Walmart. They're next to the light bulbs and batteries.
February 15, 201214 yr You can get a poe injector for avout $30 Sent from my SGH-I727R using Tapatalk
February 16, 201214 yr Just deployed 3 Versatek POE injector/splitter combinations over a standard gigabit network and it works perfectly. Injector - $36.99 Splitter - $27.99
February 22, 201214 yr If you know what you're doing, and are just looking for a simple hack to send some power over an existing cat5/6 cable, splurge on this $6 kit http://www.adafruit.com/products/435 (this is not an official PoE kit, it's for hardware hacker types)

This could be ideal for powering either a small switch or a wireless access point out of reach of conventional power. (And i confirmed my hardware hacker status years ago )

(And i confirmed my hardware hacker status years ago ) also note, since it uses two pairs of the cable, you'll be only able to run 100Mb/s. 1000Mb/s is not possible.
February 25, 201214 yr Author Just to follow up - I decided to just bite the bullet and use an existing non-wireless router acting as a switch. (no wan port connection) It draws 7w. Might eventually spend $20 when there's a sale on a 5 port gigabit green switch. (managed would be nice - something to play with) I solved my power problem... Wasn't worth spending more money for other HW to provide the power for the PoE. I had wrongly assumed that such devices would be able to use existing signals on the ethernet cable and it didn't require the router/switch powering it to be "special".
