not all HDDs recognized from multi-bay enclosure

Featured Replies

Hello,

my Unraid only recognizes 1 of my 3 USB hard drives (all in a multi-bay enclosure), and I can no longer build an array.

System went well for many days, but after i tried to add an SSD cache not all HDDs were recognized anymore.

Under "Tools" → "System Devices" → "SCSI," all devices are listed correctly. However, on the "Main" tab, only one of the 3 hard drives is recognized correctly. The others are not detectable.

I have already tried a different USB port (currently using a slow USB 2.0 port because of this).

Any ideas ?

This means multiple devices have the same ID, this is usually an enclosure issue and fairly typical with USB, and Unraid win't accept that, some pass different IDs, did you say that this same enclosure worked before? If yes, are you on the same Unraid release? 6 and 7 can use a different driver for USB that can change this.

Hi JorgeB,

the same enclosure worked perfectly fine until i tried to add an cache device today. After first boot, just one device showed up. Is it possible to reset the IDs ?

I didnt change unraid version. I`m on unraid 7 beta 3.

If it worked before, the only thing I can think that would explain that if it was using the regular usb-storage driver, maybe connecting the USB made it use the UASP driver, but it doesn't make much sense, still worth a try adding this to syslinux.cfg and then reboot, if the disks are still not detected correctly post the lsusb -t output again.

I tried your syslinux.cfg change. nothing happened except the 3 SCSI devices in System Devices were also gone.

After that I was messing around a bit more and even tried plugging in a new Unraid stick, but I had the same issue where only some of the drives showed up. After switching back to my 'usual' stick, suddenly all the drives were there again. Now I'm too scared to reboot...

IDs are the same (!), i switched USB-Plugs to 10G and everything is fine for now...

Does it make a difference if you plug them all into separate USB controllers?

The driver is now the regular USB storage driver, but if that doesn't help not much else you can do, like mentioned, this is typical with USB enclosures, and one of the reasons they are not recommended, the only strange thing about this is if it really worked before, do you have diags showing when it worked?

Didnt test this (just have on, but need another for parity disk), but for @JorgeB explanation it should work because they will get different IDs

No, no problems, no need for diagnostics. This is the first major problem I've had with Unraid. Is it possible to force Unraid to install a specific USB driver or delete other drivers except the regular? I mean, the only thing I changed was swapping one USB key for another.

You have already tried both, UAS and regular USB, AFAIK there's no other option.

But how could i tell unraid to change driver ? I did not found any option and i was surprised when everything was fine after reboot...

With v7 it will use the newer UASP driver by default, if supported by the devices, using

usb_storage.quirks=2109:0715:u

will make it use the old USB storage driver.

I would say yes with the right tool. Orico is know for laziness so they don't bother change the default usb identity or update the firmware. I managed to update the firmware and change the series number (assuming you are using Orico enclosure because not many brand out there that is that lazy).
