February 20, 201214 yr Changed the Computer Name of a Windows 7 VM. Rebooted the Windows 7 VM. From my laptop (Vista) or other computers on my network, I can see and access the new name for the Windows 7 VM BUT I still see the old name and of course gives me an error if I try to access via the old name. So how do I go about "removing" the old name from the network list?
February 20, 201214 yr 1. restart the router/modem 2. Google on how to clear the network mappings/listing
February 20, 201214 yr Author Thanks. Was just getting ready to reboot router/modem/switches when I checked again and now it has gone. Guess it just needed time to "refresh/timeout".
February 20, 201214 yr Google "Master Browser". This is a Microsoft required service for linking Windows file servers together via CIFS. The exact situation depends on how you have configured your windows sharing. Normally, the master Browser will eventually eliminate the 'computer' that you renamed. (I don't know how long this will take.) The other thing to do is shut down EVERY computer on the network. Then reboot them one by one. As the network (Workgroup or Home Group) comes back up, one of your computers that is on the windows network will be 'elected' as the "Master Browser" and it will collect the names of all the computers that are associated with that group. It will take some time for everything to be visible... PS--- I sometimes think a good deal of witchcraft is involved as all of this is happening. The reason being that sometimes the entire network is up in a couple of minutes and other times, it takes forever!
