February 25, 201214 yr Three machines need UPS devices: desktop, unRAID II, unRAID I. Desktop and unRAID II are in my office, so if they could use a single UPS, that would be great. unRAID I is in the closet and full of disks, so it should really have it's own UPS. desktop: Thermaltake TR2 RX 850w PSU one SSD two 1tb WD Black unRAID II: Antec SL350 PSU three 1tb WD Black three 500gb WD unRAID I: Corsair CX500 13 tb disks (two EADS, nine EARS, and two Samsung Spinpoint) Questions: I know from past experience that the server's array can't be stopped until I close Total Commander, or any open programs using an unRAID server. Can I set things up on the UPS devices to shutdown my desktop FIRST, then start the process of shutting down the servers? I don't full understand the different types of sine wave technology that I've read about. Can that be explained in simple terms? Thanks!
February 26, 201214 yr Can I set things up on the UPS devices to shutdown my desktop FIRST, then start the process of shutting down the servers? Yes. My desktop Ubuntu machine shares the UPS with my unRAID server. The desktop is configured to shutdown one minute before unRAID.
February 26, 201214 yr There are two kinds of sine waves produced by UPS units, true sine wave, and stepped sine wave. The black line is a true AC sine wave, like what you get out of a wall outlet, the blue line is a crude simulated sine wave created by a cheap inverter, and the red line would be a higher quality stepped sine wave created by a higher quality inverter (UPS). How do you know which kind of sine wave your UPS makes? Price. Generally speaking, the more you spend the better the inverter will be. You can also look on the manufacturer's website to see if they have spec sheets that tell you. The bigger question is, does it matter? Yes and no. For a while there was some talk about how stepped sine waves would damage high frequency switching power supplies (like the one used in notebook and desktop computers.) I don't recall anything ever coming of it though. No huge scandals in the trade papers or anything, lol. My personal opinion, since power supplies are built to deal with true sine waves, try to match that as much as possible with your UPS. Also, buy more UPS then you need. 1) you plug in more stuff over time 2) Fully discharging lead acid batteries is bad for them. So buy a UPS that should last 2x as long as your average power outage. (or turn off the load to keep the UPS from fully discharging.)
March 7, 201214 yr Author I snagged the APC BE550G Back-UPS ES for unRAID II.Seems to be functioning just fine. I am concerned about the bolded section below. I saw another user's output from UPS Status, and the LOADPCT was listed. Any ideas why mine is not?
