February 29, 201214 yr I bought a norco 4220. My plan is 20 data drive, 1 parity drive, 1 cache drive, 1 bluray drive. I already got the case, 1 data drive, 1 parity drive, 1 cache drive, 1 bluray drive(still havent received the mb, so havent practically built it). The reason im getting the 4220 is to use a bluray drive so that i can rip(hopefully legally) bluray movies into the unraid. theres a solution in windows that you just insert the bluray disk and it will automagically rip to the storage server. is there a solution in unraid so that i can insert a bluray disk and it will automagically rip/copy it to the unraid array? thanks.
February 29, 201214 yr Err. ESXI? Put windows and unraid both on that server? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
March 1, 201214 yr Author since i only got 2 saslp, i think the max number of drive supported in esxi is 16. maybe i misunderstood, but i dont really understand esxi. i think i made a mistake buying the slim bluray drive for unraid. what do you guys think?
March 1, 201214 yr Yes. I think you should put it in a box and send it to me. Well. I can't see a use in unraid but if you ever build a small form factor htpc, you have the drive. If you go esxi, you can use it. And yes if your system supports vt-d 16 drives without an expander. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
March 1, 201214 yr I don't know about putting it in unRAID but you can go the route that I did. Build the unRAID Server. Then build an inexpensive pc in a HTPC Case. Ripping movies doesn't take a lot of CPU so inexpensive computer will get the job done. And building it in an HTPC case allows you to have it sit nicely with your other AV Gear. After thats build purchase AnyDVD HD. Then purchase the "Copy Disc" feature from MyMovies and install it on Windows Media Center. After thats all setup you just turn on your HTPC, Pop in the Disc, Hit Copy Disc and the ripping process will start. MyMovies will add the Cover Art and Metadata for you also.
March 3, 201214 yr Author i think i should mention my actual spec items i already bought 1. cpu - intel i2100 2. mb - x9scm 3. ram - kingston 8gb e9s ram 4. case - norco 4220 5. parity - wd 3tb green 6. cache - wd 3tb green 7. data - wd 3tb green 8. usb drive - 8gb sandisk micro 9. seasonic 850 psu 10. raid - saslp 11. slim bluray drive - sony did i waste money on x9scm since i didnt utilize vt-d? did i waste money on server ram since only server mb requires server ram? did i waste money on the slim bluray drive? please advice. thanks.
March 3, 201214 yr Yes, your drive is a waste unless you're going to run virtual machines so it can be used. If the server ram is ECC, then it's a extra needless cost when the motherboard can't use ECC ram. Peter
March 3, 201214 yr You have got a very solid setup. many people would be jealous of your build I bet. There is a reason many people copy the Goliath/Atlas builds. They cost a few bucks more to build.. but, they are very fast and very solid with low power consumption. The only only issue is you picked up a BR drive that you cant use in unraid natively. i think this is why most people ask about their builds before they buy them if they are not sure. if you were running WHS 2011 on the same hardware, the BR drive could be used. so the hardware is compatible, it is OS issue. Options: You could still build a HTPC around that drive or you could just return it. you could swap CPU's and go ESXi. [not running ESXi is not a mistake, it is not for everyone. it can be a lot of work for those not up on technology. Up until I posted Atlas, not very many people here were doing ESXi with an unraid storage server or even thought about it.] put the BR-drive in your desktop to rip? there are slim to 5.25" adapters for about $12 and slim dvd to usb adapters for about $10.. ECC RAM: ECC is a good for servers in general, but it also means (usually) you got a better quality of ram and less likely to have issues or errors. Not a waste! other thoughts: you seem to be upset because you made a 1 minor mistake in the build of a what looks to be a rock solid server that will last you years with no trouble. We all make errors in our builds or in trying out new hardware. that drive is not a total waste. I could defiantly find other uses for it besides putting it into my ESXi box.. i know that is probably a $100+ drive, that can be a bit much money wise, but it still can be used other ways. EDIT: I forgot to mention. if you got the -f option? you have IPMI support. if you look at neweggs reviews. it is all 5 Star
March 4, 201214 yr [not running ESXi is not a mistake, it is not for everyone. it can be a lot of work for those not up on technology. Up until I posted Atlas, not very many people here were doing ESXi with an unraid storage server or even thought about it.] I can attest to that. Johnm with his Atlas thread intrigued me into building an Atlas clone with ESXi. It was a learning experience but Johnm's walkthrough made it a lot easier. My only "gripe" is that I wish I went this route originally but then again, Atlas didn't exist then and I had no clue about ESXi. I "blame" Johnm for not building/posting Atlas sooner j/k I wouldn't go back. Got my Windows VM which handles the sickbeard, sabnzdb, videoredo stuff. And since unRaid and the Windows VM are on the same server, accessing the files on unRaid are very very fast since it doesn't need to go thru the LAN.
