November 2, 20241 yr In my Unraid 6.12.10 backup server I had a WD Red Plus 4TB data drive fail. I booted my Unraid server with Hiren Tool boot up DVD (most current version) and ran WD Diags tool against the drive. I did both a quick and long test and the drive proved to be OK. When I rebooted Unraid, the failed disk was no longer a part of the array and disk1 was undefined. The WD disk was now an unassigned device. I ran a preclear and the drive was then added back to the array. However the rebuild was reporting to take over 200 days. So I gave it a few hours and the rebuild was reporting to be paused and I could not restart the rebuild. I shut the computer down and removed the WD Red Plus. My second Unraid (primary server) had a fairly new Seagate Iron Wolf 4TB as unassigned device which I rarely used. So I removed it from my primary Unraid server and place it into Unraid backup server to replace the failed WD. I also ran a preclear on the Iron Wolf and it cleared OK. I added the Seagate Iron Wolf to my array. And now I am being informed the data reconstruction will take 54 days, sometimes it decreases to 20 days or even 1 day but returns to a higher value. Both times when doing the data reconstruction I hear a beep which only happens during the data reconstruction and not the preclear or when using Hirens Tools. Please refer to attached screen capture and diagnostic zip file. Any tips or comments would be much appreciated. Cheers Ken junkyard-diagnostics-20241031-1745.zip
November 2, 20241 yr Community Expert Solution Looks like a power/connection with disk1, check/replace cables and try again.
November 2, 20241 yr Author Thanks very much JorgeB for your advice. I've replaced the power cables to the drives and now running a data re-build. It appears to be running OK. Estimated time is only 9 hours. Again, many thanks. It is greatly appreciated.
November 3, 20241 yr Author When I went to bed last night the reconstruction had just over an hour to complete. This morning the reconstruction completed however Unraid is showing that disk1 is unmountable: Unsupported or no file system. When I select Format I am told to do this for adding a new drive to the array and not to be used for data reconstruction. So I am a bit confused, I thought the data reconstruction was going to create the new filesystem and place data onto the drive? Do I format the drive? Again many thanks for your support.

Not quite. The rebuild makes the physical drive agree at the raw sector level with the emulated drive as parity has no concept of files or file systems.. If the drive was unmountable before the rebuild then it will be unmountable after the rebuild. You were correct not to format the drive as that would result in data loss. Handling of unmountable drives is covered here in the online documentation accessible via the Manual link at the bottom of the Unraid GUI. In addition every forum page has a DOCS link at the top and a Documentation link at the bottom. The Unraid OS->Manual section covers most aspects of the current Unraid release.
November 3, 20241 yr Author OK, I think I did what was suggested in the manual. The manual was not as clear as the old Netware manuals we used in the past. I removed -n option as suggested and left it blank. However it would not run and the manual suggested I use -L option to remove any previous logs, Which I did. I now a page of this information. What do I do now?
November 3, 20241 yr Author I took the array out of maintenance mode by stopping it and restarting it. It now appears everything is fine with DISK 1 and my array? Was this the correct thing to do? I believe it was?
November 3, 20241 yr Author Thanks kindly, I did resolve the issue and everything is fine. And I am one happy camper. Many thanks...
