newbie has very general questions about addon applications

Featured Replies

hello all, i have my parts on order and hope to be building in about a week!

i have been a long time user of sabnzbd, sickbeard, yamj, nmtserver, and air video (might be missing some).  i feel like i know these programs quite well, and have a working system that i really love.

i needed to expand, plus i have no 'safety' ie redundancy around my data, therefore i decided the time is right to build a large, expandable unraid server

i have a general question about the above apps- do i continue to run them on my pc, but then get them to extract and store the media on the server?  in other words do i continue to use the programs just like today, but need to configure them differently?

or do i remove them from my pc and install them right on the server?  i realize they probably all work a bit differently but at some level they are all fairly small programs which use large media databases... i'm guessing that i continue to have them installed on my main pc but then they store to and stream from the server?

just looking for a high level idea before i dig deeper into my app research!

thanks, so glad to be a part of this great community

Fundamentally everything would be the same on with the applications on the server versus your pc. Once set up they run the same. The setup can be a little more involved than it is on your pc, but if you follow directions it can be a relatively painless procedure.

One pro of having the apps on the server is your streaming is not dependent on your pc running. Running the apps on the pc will require you to have both devices on to make use of it. Putting the apps on the server it is the only thing running, and likely using less power than the pc would by itself.

cool thanks.  i can definitely see the benefit of having programs run off the server 24 7 and not needing the pc...

i think i still don't quite understand how to run the apps... for example, with yamj i run every couple of days to add new movies to the jukebox...if the app was on the server, would i log in to the server, and then run the app?  i assume it would be different as the server is linux and i'm currently running the windows yamj for example

i think i'll take baby steps here.  first i'll get the box up and running as storage and then maybe add these programs to the server one at a time.  i assume i can do that later?

With yamj I'd set up a cron job to have it run automatically. When I used it my job ran at 0500 and 1700. before we got up and before we got home.

+1

I was going to suggest that before I read your post. The simplest, easiest way to automate it.

Sab and sickbeard will be setup(if you use the plug-ins) to start automatically, and as long as you make the data directory part of your array or cache drive, it will not have to be set up again if you reboot(default is part of the volatile system). The install directory can be in the volatile memory, which is actually desired as it makes updating easier. Other than setup, they act just as they do on a windows pc.

I do not have experience with mntserver or airvideo, but many users have success(atleast with airvideo, I haven't seem any threads on mntserver) running them, so I can only imagine they work as advertised as well.

With anything that has a command/script that you normally run daily or setup a scheduled task to run, crons are the equivalent. You can, of course, login either at the console or through telnet and run the command, or automate it, whichever you prefer.

And lastly, yes, you can get the server up and running and then add the apps one at a time whenever you choose. They are all third-party options and subsequently lime-tech doesn't support them, but the community can/will help where possible. It is preferred to install them separately after the initial server setup is complete and you are sure its stable, so if there is a problem its easier to narrow it down. If you install the server and 5 apps at the same time, and something doesn't work right, that's a lot of stuff to make sure is running correctly to find the problem, :)

thanks for all the awesome help, i'm glad i can get the server setup first, and then add the apps later

call me the dumbest guy on the forum, but i still can't envision exactly how this will work...for example- sickbeard.  today, if i want to add a show, i create a new folder with my tv shows on my pc, then i log into sickbeard, and 'add new show'.  how will i do this once sickbeard is running on the server?  where do i log into?  do i still logon to sickbeard on my pc to manage shows, and the server just takes care of scanning, downloading, and sorting?

basically, yes

basically the later. Logging into sickbeard is relative. Sickbeard is a webgui just like unraid has. Where now you go to "http://locahost:8081" or whatever the port is for sickbeard, you would log in at "http://tower:8081", "tower" being the web-address of your unraid installation.

Sickbeard, as well as sabnzbd, you can log in from any PC on the local network(or from the WAN if you have port forwarding enabled for that port, not recommended) and control/use sickbeard the same way as you would from the pc its installed on.

Also, with later versions of sickbeard, the folder doesn't have to exist first, you can add it through sickbeard.

EDIT: Prostuff beat me to it, and in fewer words!

thanks to both ;D

i definitely look forward to getting both installed.

i think i see what you mean.... so for sickbeard and sab i could probably have the main pc off, but server on, and then for example could bookmark items on nzbmatrix from my ipad, and have them automatically downloaded.

definitely on my to do list, after a simple little thing like getting my server built, my 20tb of data copied over, etc.  so in other words, i'll get to it in a couple of months!!!1

haha awesome!  i am getting a 24 bay beast, not a norco, but you basically hit the nail on the head!

Can't wait to see the beast. Your going to have to post it in the UCD section.

Best Wishes,
