Suddenly my parity drive is acting up (disabled)

Featured Replies

So, one morning a few weeks ago (3 maybe) my parity drive was disabled.

I didn't understand how or why, but i removed the drive from the array, added it, rebuilt the parity and then it was okay.
When the rebuilt was done I ran a smart test without errors.

Now the disk is disabled again.

Why?

Disk dropped offline, replace cables and post new diags.

Are we talking sata or power or both?

Could be either, but I think dropping offline is more likely to point at power being the issue.

I have  now replaced the Sata cable.
I don not have any replacement for the power, but if necessary i can switch the power connectors with another drive.

That would help in working out if the issue is power related.   Note, though, that it is not unknown for power cables to work themselves slightly loose over time due to vibration (particularly if using power splitters) so it may be just a case of reseating the power cable.

Try re-syncing parity, and post new diags if it fails again.

Diags are not working, but looks like parity may be failing, run an extended SMART test on that disk.

Attachments still cannot be downloaded, it appears to be a forum issue, you can post the SMART test result in code tags.

I would love to understand mopre about this, because i read this in the log

SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED

And looking through:

SMART Attributes Data Structure revision number: 16

Nothing is failed...

So how did you come to the conclusion that smart test failed?

I ask because i want to learn and also, i have 11 days left of my 3 year warranty. So if i do a RMA and they do a SMART test, will they also say that it failed? 😃

The overall-health is basically meaningless, it only changes if there's a FAILING NOW attribute, the test is this part:

SMART Extended Self-test Log Version: 1 (1 sectors)
Num  Test_Description    Status                  Remaining  LifeTime(hours)  LBA_of_first_error
# 1  Extended offline    Completed: read failure       10%     25006         106539800

If failed with a read error.
