December 1, 20241 yr I have 16 Hard drives and am looking for a 16i card that will work with unRAID with no issues, i came across a LSI 9305-16i but i don't know if it needs to be flashed to work. On ebay they range from $70 to $300 I only have room for one card in my mother board. The more costly ones come pre-flashed to IT mode but i read somewhere that they should all be in IT mode. Can anyone help?
December 2, 20241 yr I bought my LSI 9305-16i on ebay for $155 from this seller: https://www.ebay.com/str/gogreenremarketing I see he still has 10 available. Now for $80. Just don't by anything from china. Stick to US sellers and you should be good. I also read somewhere, I think from @JorgeB that all 9305 are in IT mode. And he knows what he's talking about. Very happy with my card, I don't need a extra fan on it either. Which is an issue with other popular LSI cards as the 9300-16 I for example, as they run very hot.
December 2, 20241 yr Author In the off chance that it is not in IT mode how hard is it to flash? Also how do i check, I can not do command line unless someone has written out directions for each step. Thanks for the help.
December 2, 20241 yr It's typically easy, but that controller should only exist in IT mode, assuming it's really that model, you can then post the diags to confirm.
December 2, 20241 yr I haven't looked up the 9305, but the 9400, 9500, and 9600 (and probably 9700 they are working on currently) are all HBAs, so no IT/IR anymore. The 9400 has two firmwares, one for SATA, SAS and NVMe, and one that lacks NVMe but has bigger buffers and can handle more commands at once. To flash, you'd use storcli. The 9500 had mostly one firmware, until P30, now it also has one with and without NVMe. It also uses storcli, but a different version. The 9600 only has one firmware-package with everything, it needs storcli2 to flash. Advantages of the 9400 and 9500 are that each uses less power than the previous generation, the 9600 uses more since it is a SAS4 card. Edited December 2, 20241 yr by Wody

How reliable are the power consumption numbers broadcom advertises? Looking at their site 9500-16i uses almost the same amount power than my current 9207-8i

Looking at their site 9500-16i uses almost the same amount power than my current 9207-8i I figure they are optimized values, so you won't see them in the real world, but they are probably all skewed in the same way, so the comparison between them should hold. I'm not sure if I could measure it reliable, I do have a watt-meter but since the difference between the 9500-16i, 9400-16i and 9300-8i that I have is only 2w each, it would fall in the error-margin.
