Help: RTX 3050 not transcoding in Plex

Featured Replies

I had plex HW transcoding working with my 1060 and recently upgraded to a 3050. I updated the drivers and changed the container variable NVIDIA_VISIBLE_DEVICES to the new 3050 ID. My video card is recognized in other containers and I can see that it is recognized in the Plex container too but it will only direct play. When I try to transcode, it is just a black screen. NVIDIA_DRIVER_CAPABILITIES is set to 'all' which is unchanged from my previous setup.

Any ideas?

Does it show up in Plex settings - transcoder (show advanced) - Hardware Transcoding Device

Yes, the RTX 3050 does show up there.  I uninstalled and re-installed the drivers and now I'm getting a picture when trying to transcode but it will only work for about 30 seconds before it freezes.  The plex logs say "Transcode runner appears to have died."

If you are testing it with a web browser, try again with an actual Plex client (smart TV, Apple4K TV, Roku, etc).  The Plex web browser has had funky issues for years.

You can also delete the contents of your codec folder in your appdata.  Stop Plex, delete, restart.  Plex will download fresh set of codecs at startup.  This has fixed issues for many people.

I've also had success fixing flaky playback by downgrading to an earlier version of Plex (usually 2 versions or so back).  Plex tends to break working stuff when they update to add stuff I don't use/want/need.
