Docker storage driver - overlay2

Featured Replies

Hello together,

reading the changelogs for 7.0 i stumbled over the part with the docker driver.

https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/release-notes/7.0.0/#add-support-for-overlay2-storage-driver

I use a directory for docker and a zfs pool for the directory so im advised to do this if im correct.

Some questions are bothering me here:

Do i need to upgrade the pool with the new features first?

If i understand correctly, i stop the docker service, switch to overlay2, delete the docker folder completely  and restart the docker service.
After that i set all my containers up again with the existing templates that should still be available.

Am i correct here? This might not, but likely could be some trouble and work with about 40 containers running.
Is this change really critical or am i save to just go on and see if there will be unstabilities for me without going for the changes?

Thanks in advance for the replys. Could not find much about this topic in other places.

No.

Yes, you can restore them from apps:

https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/manual/docker-management/#re-create-the-docker-image-file
Then:
https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/manual/docker-management/#re-installing-docker-applications
Also see below if you have any custom docker networks:
https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/manual/docker-management/#docker-custom-networks

I followed the steps to disable Docker, change Docker storage driver to overlay2, re-enable Docker and re-download all the Docker applications.

However, it does not seem that my custom docker network was deleted. It is still listed if I run "docker network ls" and it seem that my container apps on my custom docker network can still refer to each other by the container name instead of the IP addresses.

Do you think I did something wrong?

With a docker folder it may not be needed, if all is working then it's fine.

Another question.

When deleting the folder do I need to delete /system/docker or only /system/docker/docker

Just the actual docker folder, path will be the one from docker settings.

@MoooNhow did this go, as I need to do it as well?  I wish there was something like logs that could indicate it’s necessary before doing this change.  Makes me extremely nervous.

Following the steps here everything went well
