May 20, 201214 yr I have not seen any of these go bad, now that is 2 in a week posted here (both in ausieland?). then again i guess the thousands that work, people dont post about... (I have hundred of these at work now. only one had an issue. the tech dropped the cpu into the socket and bent some pins) PS try and make sure your grounded when working on the mobo.. wrist strap or boot straps.. The other one was mine, I'm in Holland. Far away from the Aussies. The replacement from Supermicro took a week to arrive, but works fine. It booted immediately without problems. Techs at Supermicro USA and Holland, both came without hesitation with the same answer: Board has a power issues, contact RMA department for replacement. You might check for bend pins in the CPU-socket though.
May 20, 201214 yr @dikkiedirk - haven't contacted supermicro for rma as I bought it from newegg ... Will try them after I've tried all the suggestions here. Thanks everyone for your suggestions :-) You might ask them if they can set-up a cross-shipment? That's what I did.
May 21, 201214 yr Is this the right PSU? http://www.cdromland.nl/productinfo/153087/Corsair/Corsair_PSU_Enthusiast_Modular_TX750M Any succes in solving this issue?
May 21, 201214 yr Author I have tried the following (all with NO beeps and no sign of the system running - other than as before - fan spinning momentarily then stopping... then a little while later starting again ... rinse repeat). IPMI worked in all cases - nothing connected to MB (no CPU, no RAM), case fans connected to power supply - cpu and cpu fan as well as case fan - cpu and cpu fan with 1 memory stick In all cases IPMI worked correctly - i could browse the application. I tried starting the system using the web ui and it eventually said that it failed. The fans spun up as I indicated above and then off ..then on ... etc. There were no logs available in the IPMI. I have tried to look for bent pins ...but to be frank I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. I took some photos and posted them here. If anyone knows what to look for please feel free to help :- ) Unless anyone spots something obvious in the photos I'm thinking i'm looking at a RMA Thanks again for your assistance :- )
May 21, 201214 yr Author Is this the right PSU? http://www.cdromland.nl/productinfo/153087/Corsair/Corsair_PSU_Enthusiast_Modular_TX750M Any succes in solving this issue? We must have just posted at the same time. No luck :-( That looks to be the same power supply. http://www.corsair.com/en/power-supply-units/hx-series-power-supply-units/professional-series-hx750-80-plus-silver-certified-modular-power-supply.html and the other one is this one http://www.corsair.com/en/power-supply-units/tx-series-power-supply-units/enthusiast-series-modular-tx850m-80-plus-bronze-certified-750-watt-high-performance-modular-power-supply.html
May 21, 201214 yr Well you tried 2 PSUs and all variables concerning memory and CPU. Rather frustrating. Something is broken and my bet is the motherboard. Some other questions: What is normal behaviour of this board when the PSU is switched on? Should the fans start and stay on or stop after some time? Does a PSU have a minimum load requirement, below which it won't turn on? Maybe some PSU's are more sensitive to this?
June 11, 201214 yr Author I have to say my patience is *really* being tested these days :-( I *finally* got RMA approval and shipped it off last Wednesday (it's still weeks away as it has to go to redirector and then to Australia). I also decided to contact the importer here in Australia and obtain a new motherboard from another supplier. I did that ... and it *still* doesn't work :-( Exact same issue as before. Fan switches on for a second and then off. IPMI shows up as before ... no VGA. No USB keyboard or mouse. I tried with just the CPU and CPU fan ... no beeping. Added RAM. Same ... added HDD now the CPU fan doesn't spin up properly. Makes me think poor power supply ... even though it meets all the required specifications etc. So does anyone have any suggestions of (server) power supplies that are guaranteed to work with the motherboard??? thanks belorion
June 11, 201214 yr A lot of us that have this board use the Seasonic desktop power supplies, and they work 100% fine. I have the X660 80 Plus Gold and a lot of the other guys have 650/750/760 or similar. I can only go by my (and their) experiences, but I've not heard of any issues with this combination. However you're the 2nd person (that I've noticed) to have an issue with Corsair PSU's and this board, and considering you've had two boards do the same thing, I'd suggest it is almost definitely a PSU issue, and the issue as another poster mentioned above is that those Corsair PSU's may not be SSI compliant. Actually just did a bit more reading, and you're the third! See here as well: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=14872.msg141722#msg141722

See here as well: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=14872.msg141722#msg141722 There's a store near(ish) to me that has this http://www.cplonline.com.au/online-shop?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_default.tpl&product_id=10697&category_id=609 Seasonic S12D 850W 80+ Sliver Power Supply for $185 Which appears to meet my total power supply needs or this one http://www.cplonline.com.au/online-shop?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_default.tpl&product_id=10700&category_id=609 Seasonic X-760 80plus Gold 760W Power Supply The very first Seasonic full modular multi-output ATX, high-wattage power supply that has ever obtained the 80PLUS Gold certification. For $225 Which has a lower Amp rating but also based upon this http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=12219.msg116053#msg116053 should be fine for 24 Green drives. They were out of stock of these when I bought the other corsair power supply last time... hmmm. Can anyone tell me the (relevant) difference between these two? Ie why I would pay for the X over the S12 (I know one has a higher Watts rating and the other has a better efficiency at lower loads - i *really* just want one that works). If either of those isn't ok how about something else from here http://www.cplonline.com.au/online-shop?page=shop.browse&category_id=609 I am considering paying the premium for the X solely because others on the board here have them working now with this motherboard... but I would rather not if I don't have to as I will have 2 mother boards and 3 power supplies before I have most of my drives. Thanks belorion
June 11, 201214 yr You could always sell off the extra stuff and recoup some $$? I'd grab the Seasonic X, it's definitely SSI compliant and as mentioned, many X9SCM users use it and have no issue with it. It's the safe bet. I'm in Melbourne myself and picked my Seasonic up from PC Case Gear at Mulgrave (you have to order online first, no in store purchases.)

Thanks belorion One difference between the two is the efficiency rating, Silver vs Gold. What this translates into for the real world is less heat and less power. Gold is about 3% more efficient. For a house which requires cooling, that means a power savings of 5-6% (3% less on the computer and 3% less heat to remove). If your house requires heat, it is kind of a wash as the 3% is delivered as heat which you wanted anyway.
